Who is this guy, and does he stand a better chance in the general then the other candidates?

Dr. Tom Coburn was a Congressman from Eastern Oklahoma (the most Democratic part of the state) from 1995 to 2001; he had limited himself to three terms, and thus did not run for reelection in 2000. He is a true conservative, and one who can appeal to the conservative Democrats that decide elections in Oklahoma. And because his political base is in the same area as Democrat Senate candidate Brad Carson (who replaced Coburn in Congress), it would make it practically impossible for Carson to get enough votes to win the general election. Dr. Coburn would make a great Senator, and luckily for us he's also our best possible candidate. I hope GOP primary voters in Oklahoma realize this and help Dr. Coburn keep Senator Nickles' seat in GOP hands.

I agree, I don't really see too much hope in Kirk Humphreys. Have you seen kirkisajerk.com. That site really ruins his image!

Wow, I like the fact that he's from the same district, I think that would help him HUGE.

Anyhow, I'm not from Oak. but from what you've said, I'm in favor of Coburn. Hope he wins the primary. What are his chances of winning the primary?

I clicked on the site, it seems like a real hatchet job, so I wouldn't take it too seriously.

That said, Coburn just looks better. Less bagage, equally conservative, and better resume (and location!).

I'm guessing that if Coburn gets the nomination, he saves this seat for us.

That said, I sure wish Steve Largent or J.C. Watts was in this race.

I'm not from OK either, but from what I've heard he starts off behind, since Humphreys has a solid base in Oklahoma City (which has a lot more registered Republicans than in Eastern OK), and he got a lot of early endorsements from prominent OK Republicans. However, since Humphreys has not exactly revved up the GOP faithful and polls show Carson beating Humpreys, a lot of people were abandoning Humphreys even before Dr. Coburn jumped into the race. Hopefully, Coburn will be able to get his message out to enough Republicans so that he can win the primary and go on to victory in November.

Dr. Coburn has excited and energized the conservative grass roots in Oklahoma. I think that because of that, he's the slight favorite in the primary and tough candidate in the general. Kirk Humphreys is a good mayor, but he's fallen victim to an anti-OK City sentiment in the rural areas. Furthermore, his focus on economic developement has made him seem lukewarm about the social issues, and other voters find him to be too urbane. Coburn is a forthright and outspoken conservative who tells it like it is, and has a following in the most 'Rat part of the state.

No doubt about it, Tom Coburn is the strongest Republican Senate candidate. Check out his site and give him your support-

I first learned of Coburn on C-SPAN's Booknotes, where he discussed his book, Breach of Trust. It's an insider story detailing all that's wrong with Congress as an institution.

I liked what I saw of him. A lot. This is very nice to see.

My decision to run for the Senate has been a very difficult one as I struggled with what I thought I should do and what I wanted to do. I have resolved to follow my convictions and seek to become Oklahoma's next U. S. Senator for the following reasons:

1. I believe we have a deficit of moral courage in the United States Congress. We have many learned individuals who know what is right but have not the courage to stand against the moral corruption that is now attempting to undermine our republic.

2. I believe we have lost sight of the moorings of the constitution in that it was founded upon the principles of a creator and that we have inalienable rights given by that creator. We need leaders who are unashamed of their faith and understand its importance in the maintenance of a free society.

3. I believe that we must address squarely the problems that face us with Medicare and Social Security and discuss openly how we honor commitments to our seniors and protect the future of our children and grandchildren. Ignoring the problem simply says that the future generations can be sacrificed.

4. I believe the U.S. Congress lacks effective leadership to control spending and point out the process by which self serving politicians sell our children down the river with deficit spending. Each and every child I have delivered over the past year has owed 24,000 dollars at the time they took their first breath.

5. I believe our current trade policies have resulted in a loss of the manufacturing base that creates a national security issue.

6. Finally, I believe that we should be about protecting the innocent of which the unborn are paramount. I will do all in my power to protect the unborn.

- Released by Dr. Tom Coburn

Oklahoma has a habit of voting against an early front-runner. In 1980 with an open Senate seat, due to the retirement of Henry Bellman, most GOP attention was focused on Jack ZINK and Ed NOBLE. And, a two-year state senator from Ponca City, Don NICKLES, had the audacity to challenge the status quo. He finished 2nd in the Primary, then, won the runoff vs. much better known, and, better-financed Jack Zink. He won the General Election over a popular Dem US Attorney, Andy COATS.

Those who think the OK Senate race is wrapped up for Kirk Humphries are mistaken. Those who respect integrity, and conservative economic, as well as social values are looking at TOM COBURN. Remember - he had the guts to stand up to Newt Gingrich, when party loyalty was in question.

This thread seems to randomly have been bumped.

Seeming as how it has been, does anybody want to tell me if there has been any Coburn/Humphries polling?

The more I learn about this race, the more I worry about Humphries getting the nomination. Coburn is clearly the most electable candidate, and it seems to me, the best on top of that.
