This article is over a week old, but I hadn't seen it posted yet. Hempstead Mayor James Garner is being described as a "conservative Republican," which is good to hear, since I feared he was a liberal on social issues. Garner has a good shot to defeat liberal Democrat Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy in Long Island's 4th Congressional District, which would make him the first black Republican ever elected to Congress from New York.

If he's running against McCarthy, that's all I need to hear.

James Garner would make a great Congressman, and his record of winning elections in Hempstead gives him a base in 'Rat territory. But there is a skunk at the garden party: Carolyn McCarthy has $552,689 cash on hand, while Garner only has $31,119.

A "reputation for hitting hard?" The guy as a boxer for heaven's sake-anyone who doubts it need only refer to the cover of his political biography.

McCarthy is a joke. The only times she casts a conservative vote on issues in Congress is when a bill has something to do taxes. I doubt that the people of Suffolk County-collapsing under the confiscatory property taxes and ridiculously bloated local gov't-would appreciate their congresswoman voting to levy yet more taxes on the back of an already over-burdened electorate.

Tell your friends. Tell your neighbors. Tell your relatives.

Get out the vote: G.W. Bush for President and Jim Garner for Congress.

In a region where dead incumbents win re-election, WNBC TV just described the Garner/McCarthy race as one to watch.
