Draft Rumors and the PTA

Strongsville City Council has joined the Strongsville High School PTA in opposing the possible reinstatement of a national military draft.

Annette Kopp, president of the Strongsville High School PTA, in an address to council prior to its vote, said twin bills introduced on January 7, 2003 by U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel of New York and by Sen. Fritz Hollings of South Carolina if necessary, could become law within a very short time period, perhaps as quickly as 24 hours.

Both bills - S89 and H.R. 163 - would amend the law to include women, Kopp said.

The Selective Service System has stated that it is prepared to conduct a draft immediately, providing the U.S. military with troops within 193 days from notice, she said, adding that notice would be in the form of legislative action by the Congress and implementation by the President to reinstate a draft in an emergency.

The Parents and Teachers Associatin (PTA) is pushing an anti-draft resolution in Ohio and has been successful in getting the Strongsville High School PTA and the City Council to approve this resolution.

Strongsville City Council was duped into supporting a resolution that calls for an official declaration of war before the draft could be reinstated. They fell for a ploy by the radical left-wing of the Democratic Party meant to instill fear among voters in an election year. The actions of both the City Council and the Strongsville High School PTA, while well-intended, only serve to further the agenda of those seeking to defeat President Bush.

This latest scare tactic, to make parents think that their sons and daughters might be sent to Iraq in a draft, is despicable and typical of techniques used by so-called “peace activists” to frighten Americans and plant doubt and instill panic.

While it is true that bills have been introduced in the US House and Senate to reinstate the draft, neither has any chance of passing since both President Bush and congressional leadership do not favor a draft. In fact, the administration and most military professionals feel that a draft would reduce the quality of our armed forces and reduce the effectiveness of our military. Both of these bills were introduced by liberal Democrats without co-sponsors solely in an attempt to increase opposition of the war in Iraq by raising the stakes of continued military operations in the Middle East and place the fear of a draft before the public.

Obviously, this is the latest attempt by the Democratic Party to fabricate some fake issue, with no basis in fact, to try to keep the sinking Kerry candidacy afloat. It reeks of the same flawed tactics they have used to scare seniors into believing that Republicans are trying to divert their Social Security payments to the rich.

I do not place fault with our city councilmen or PTA for supporting such a resolution, which, on its surface, appears to be protecting our young men and women from harm. I place the blame firmly on left-wing “peace activists” intent on impairing America’s ability to protect itself and on harming the president. It’s just a shame that city council and the PTA played into the hands of these radical elements.

Didn't know there was a PTA draft. Another to add to the stupid headline list.

How can people associated with our schools be so overwhelmingly stupid? Well, they're Democrats. That explains that, I suppose.

As usual for the leftist media, there's no mention whatsoever that these two are rats leaving it to the uninformed to conclude it's a Republican bill.

Are you kidding? Have you ever been to a student program? They force you to sit through a stupid PTA meeting before you can see your kid sing. It's like being a conscript.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Congress, including Senators Kerry and Edwards, vote to give President Bush the authorization to use military force? They could've chosen to ask for a declaration of war, or could have voted against the measure. They did neither, but now that their base doesn't like the war, they are backstroking at about 80 knots per hour. Leaders make decisions, then stand behind them.

I would reenter the military today, were I able to, but alas, that is not to be. I don't think two or three years of service would harm any of todays spoiled kids, might actually help them become responsible adults. Most of the CEOs of the Fortune 1000 are veterans, what does that tell you?

A draft would mean that all of the Clinton, Gore, Kerry/Heinz and Bush kids are elligible. Just what we need. DO they put silver spoons in those mess kits?

They do that because they're required to hold only 4 meetings a year, and your child's concerts and activity fairs can themselves count as a meeting. I hate it, it's wrong.

Our PTA used to install it's officers before the Spring Choral/Band Concert. That tacky tradition stopped when I became the President, and our choral director was so grateful!

These people are really stupid or really leftist. Both bills are DOA in Congress.

They're just trying to scare everybody into voting for Kerry. We'll be seeing a lot more of this.

I'm sick of garbage like this. She probably received some type of legislative action alert from National PTA that encouraged her to act upon the given information. PTA leans left, gun control, in school health clinics, they're against vouchers and support a myriad of other leftist causes.

To give an example of their bias, the most recent publication of the PTA magazine, 'Our Children,'(Don't get me started on the title) contains an article very critical of President Bush's, 'No Child Left Behind' legislation, specifically the funding. It complains about funds being cut for certain programs. Guess where the article used was first published?

It was excerpted by permission from Mother Jones magazine.

Resuming the draft would not only eliminate the need for any women deployed but it would also eliminate the need for the dual physical standards and promotion/selection quotas installed throughout the service.
