Lorain Mayor Craig Foltin said Tuesday night that he is a candidate for Congress.
The 38-year-old second-term Republican mayor said local and national GOP officials had encouraged him to run. As the mayor of working-class Lorain, where Democrats outnumber Republican voters, Foltin is seen as perhaps the best Republican bet to win in the Democratic-leaning 13th Congressional District.

Craig Foltin is the best candidate the GOP could possibly find. If he loses, it'll be because Bob Taft is the Governor.

"Craig Foltin is the best candidate the GOP could possibly find."
I agree 100%. While President Bush was held to 44% in the CD in 2000 and 2004, I think a Republican who has proven himself to voters in heavily Democrat Loarain would have a real chance in the election, especially if the RAT nominee is former Congressman Tom Sawyer of Akron. Sawyer used to represent the portion of Summit County (including part of Akron) that lies in the 13th CD, but is unknown in the rest of the district, and his strained relationship with union leaders will hurt him in Lorain County. If Mayor Foltin comes out for "fair trade" and criticizes Sawyer's free trade votes, he might just pull off the upset.

I seriously doubt any Republican will make up a 6% difference in 2006, the tide just won't be in their favor.
Especially against someone named Tom Sawyer. How exactly can you resist voting for someone named Tom Sawyer?
I hope I'm wrong, and the guy does sound like a pretty good candidate, but I just don't see it happening this time.

I am of good Lorain stock. I used to have a "Elect Mike Scherach" (name is close enough) pocket comb. It was very functional...and durable.

Especially against someone named Tom Sawyer. How exactly can you resist voting for someone named Tom Sawyer? I suspect that little rich girl Capri Cafaro will be the Dim nominee. She has a history of losing congressional races.
