With all but a few precincts reporting, U.S. Rep. Barbara Cubin declared victory over Democratic challenger and Wilson resident Gary Trauner just after midnight Tuesday.

According to the results available at 1 a.m., Cubin led Trauner by a mere 700 votes; 91,385 to 90,685. A win by fewer than 913 votes would automatically trigger a recount under Wyoming state law.

“I’m calling it,” she told the Associated Press early Wednesday morning. “I just feel really gratified that we’re ahead, and I’m sure that we won the election.”

Can we PLEASE beat Cubin in the primary next time? There is no excuse for the increasing closeness of her races.

In the state of Wyoming, 61% of registered voters are Republicans and some 25% are Democrats. There is no excuse for a Republican incumbent to survive by only 700 votes, particularly when the incumbent Republican Senator won by more than 2 to 1.

Barbara Cubin is a lousy candidate.

I agree. Or at least pressure her into retirement.

The thing is, Republicans would have to coalesce around a single candidate. Outgoing state Treasurer Cynthia Loomis could be a good choice (if she were interested).

She's like Jim Bunning, but at least Bunning isn't up every 2 years.

The Republican Party is a lousy political party! They would still be in the majority next year if this isn't true.

"Barbara Cubin is a lousy candidate."

You think? : )

I don't think she'll run next time. But, truth be told, if she didn't get beat this year, she probably won't get beat in 2008.

Unless Freudenthal runs against her. Then she'll certainly get beat.

Freudenthal would have nowhere near as much success in a federal race as he has in gubernatorial races (kind of like Carcieri running for Congress in RI), but you're right that he may beat Cubin even in a presidential election year. I don't expect for Cubin to run again, though, and Freudenthal is unlikely to run for anything else until he finishes his second term; if Freudenthal does run a "freebie race" in 2008, it may be against Senator Enzi, since the reward is much higher.

Isn't it funny that someone like Cubin, who has made it all the way to the US House, doesn't seem to have the slightest sense of political acumen?

Threatening to slap (well, suggesting she might slap...) a third-party candidate in a wheel chair? Is she kidding? There was no reason whatsoever for her to feel ashamed to associate with DeLay, but there is a way to handle and things and get a point across...

As for whoever in her camapaign leaked that memo that she was worried about Trauner, well, I'm sad to see that tarring and feathering has gone out of vogue these days...

I think the betting is that the guv will try to move up to Senate after this term.

I also heard the word "retire" escape the lips of a Wyo Republican concerning Cubin. Hope that's true!

I hope that Senator Thomas has a full recovery and does not have to retire early, giving Freudenthal an open Senate seat in which to run. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/1735726/posts
