Ashland County Commissioner Matt Miller will seek the Republican nomination for the 16th congressional seat now held by longtime incumbent Ralph Regula, R-Bethlehem Township.
Miller garnered about 42 percent of the votes in the race against Regula in the 2006 Republican primary.
The district covers Stark, Wayne, Medina and Ashland counties.
"Our people recognize that it is going to take fresh leaders who are not part of the establishment to turn our nation and our region in the right direction," Miller said in a statement.
Miller is president of the Northeast Ohio District of the County Commissioners Association of Ohio.
His primary focus will be "rebuilding the region's economy and strengthening Ohio's families," Miller said.

Ashland is fairly Republican, so Miller should have a chance if he is the nominee.
Good.
I still think that Ralph Regula will retire. And the state Republican establishemnt wants to nominate state Senator Kirk Schuring, who (if I’m not mistaken) is a Bob Taft ally. Matt Miller sounds like more the grass roots conservative, though I don’t know a great deal about him.
We live in northern Ashland county, people are very conservative here.
And add to that, Regula wants his son for the job, supposedly (and is listed as a potential candidate on Politics1). The OH GOP Establishment wanting a Boob Taft ally is, for lack of a better word, insane (and stupid). That could readily cost us this historically GOP seat (just like how Boob McEwen handed perennial loser Strickland the 6th on a silver platter, and we know how that turned out).
I spent three weeks in Ashland last year, and it was a nice area, although I felt a bit out of place.
I’m not certain that Regula’s son will seek the seat. He was defeated for reelection as Stark County Commissioner in 2006.
Defeat does not always deter people.
I still agree with you on that.
Ohio ping
Thanks for the ping.
I grew up near Ashland.
Geez, not another one! They infest the Ohio GOP like termites.
