Richmond Hill businessman Steve Croy will be the Georgia finance chairman for Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson.

The campaign of the former U.S. senator from Tennessee is due to announce Croy's appointment today.

He also will serve on Thompson's national finance committee.

Croy, an early supporter of Thompson, said the former senator filled a void in the GOP field with a "true conservative voice."

Croy co-chaired a July 6 dinner in Atlanta that raised an estimated $400,000 for Thompson's exploratory committee.

He also served as treasurer and finance chair last year for Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle's successful campaign.

"I'm excited and honored," said Croy, who is organizing an Oct. 18 dinner and reception for the candidate in Cobb County.

You can get in the door for $1,000; hobnobbing with the candidate at a VIP reception will cost you $2,300.

Thompson formally entered the race Sept. 6, which allowed Republican candidates Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani to build a fundraising lead.

Giuliani already has had two Savannah events, one of them a breakfast Thursday that raised an estimated $45,000.

"We realize we have a challenge ahead," Croy said, "but we're going to raise the money we need."

He confirmed reports that Thompson will appear at least at two fundraising events in Savannah.

State Senate President Pro Tem Eric Johnson, R-Savannah, welcomed Croy's appointment.

"Steve has been a rising star on the fundraising scene for a couple years," Johnson said "He will be a big asset to the campaign."

In May, Johnson and Sen. Chip Rogers, R-Woodstock, led a drive that mobilized more than 40 elected officials to urge Thompson to run. They included all of Chatham County's GOP state legislators.

Today, the campaign will name Rogers, who is chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, to serve as Thompson's statewide campaign manager.

"Chip has shown leadership on immigration and other issues and is a great choice," Johnson said.
