Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani will pick up the endorsement Friday of former GOP rival Tommy Thompson, a one-time Midwestern state governor.
"Rudy Giuliani has shown that he is a true leader. He can and will win the nomination and the presidency. He is America's mayor, and during a period of time of great stress for this country he showed tremendous leadership," Thompson, the former Wisconsin governor, said in a statement obtained by the Associated Press.
The former New York mayor is to accept the endorsement in South Carolina later Friday.
Thompson is the first former 2008 Republican presidential candidate to endorse in the race, and officials familiar with details of the political courting involved said Giuliani's top rivals also sought his support. But Thompson recently told Giuliani he'd get the nod after several weeks of conversations.

Who is Tommy Thompson? Woop-De-Doo!
This should be a significant boost for Giuliani, who continues to be a major candidate against considerable odds.
If I recall from a previous thread, Tommy Thompson has been kicked off the Conservative Bus. He joins FoxNews, Ted Olson, George Will, Sean Hannity and James Dobson on the list of the Damned...
Rudy sure fits a democrats profile!
IT is for the murder of unborn babies!
IT is a big gun control nut!
IT covered for the invaders in ITS city!
IT surrounds ITself with queers and thugs!
Why does IT have an R by ITS name instead of a D?
I believe that this is the election that will set the pattern for the future face of the GOP.
Its going to be either a cross dresser & gay parade marcher
or a social conservative.
Thats it, and Rudy is the man to beat for the GOP and Hillary is the man to beat for the dems. - Pun intended.
If Rudy takes it the GOP will lose in a landslide, and before everyone jumps in, the electoral votes are there for you all to see, and Rudy has a proven record of losing to (hillary!).
Withdrawal is losing, irrespective of the apparent reason, and not running against her for the NY Senate seat was the hallmark act of a man who knew damn well that he would lose.
He has one BIG thing in his favor next November:
He isn’t (hillary!) - That did not work for Kerry (anyone but Bush) and it will not win for Rudy.
And thats it. - Be prepared.
An endorsement from Elixabeth Hasselbeck would be more significant...
"I'm in the private sector and for the first time in my life I'm earning money. You know that's sort of part of the Jewish tradition and I do not find anything wrong with that."
" I just want to clarify something because I didn't in any means want to infer or imply anything about Jews and finances and things. What I was referring to ladies and gentlemen is the accomplishments of the Jewish religion. You've been outstanding business people and I compliment you for that." And then he went on about his 'Jewish friends', and further ruffled his audience.
Thompson has made a variety of lesser comments, including referring to the Anti Defamation League as the fringe Jewish Defense League, Israel Bonds as "Jewish Bonds", and he has also reportedly referred to Winston Churchill as being the first leader of Israel.
The former governor of Wisconsin displays all the sensitivity and tact of the late Idi Amin, and he hasn't got the first clue.
I never believed that ruse about 'prostate cancer' which Rudy pulled to withdraw from the NY senate race -- three months before election day. (what was it, Aug. of 2000?)
Did anyone notice Rudy was back at his job as NYC Mayor within weeks of his withdrawel.
In fact, he looked at peak performance and healthy by that Christmas, and SURELY looked fit and healthy by time the terrorists struck on 9/11
Methinks Rudy saw himself losing in the polls, and did not want to be branded a loser.
He certainly could have continued his US Senate bid, even if he had to take a few weeks off to recuperate. In fact, he probably would have gotten a decent sympathy vote if he had stayed in after getting relatively routine surgery.(or whatever he got)
He said that??! He actually said that?
Jesus, if you had written that on FR I would have had a field day deriding you.
This guy is outright stupid!
And people elected him?!
I have been alive long enough to see the visible results of the enormous failure of the public education system.
Thanks for the post. It is an invaluable insight into the man and his mind. - bill
We think alike. I felt that exact same thing the instant that I first heard the news.
Prostrate problems are pretty common with men in his age group and he wouldn’t have to withdraw for it anyway.
When he failed to jump into the race in 04, that confirmed it.
Rudy could have knocked hillary into the footnotes of political history by taking the NY Senate seat from her, and he would have been a shoo in for the GOP nomination then. - but he knew.
Yeppers, and I provided a link in #9, but you can Google on Tommy Thompson and find even more gems. For years I have thought that Al Gore was the stupidest living American politician, that is, until I was surprised by Thompson.
