Proving again his ability to raise significant cash online, Ron Paul has raised nearly $2 million since midnight via his website.
In what is being called a "money bomb," Paul's fervent backers spread the word that today they'd blast their candidate with Internet contributions, setting up a website, "This November 5th," to push the plan. An aide said they had nothing to do with the effort.
"Supporters have spontaneously organized what I can only refer to as a one-day attack of donations," said Paul spokeswoman Kate Rick. "We started at midnight with $2.77 million raised for the quarter, and have, as of 9:36 am, climbed up to over $4.1."
As of 12:27, Paul had raised $4.73 million total.
While claiming not to be responsible for the "bombing," Paul's camp has certainly not lessened enthusiasm with a set of red numbers on their website that spin upward to show his total raised with every refresh click. Another site not formally affiliated with the campaign has set up a graph showing Paul's ascending contributions since midnight.
One Paul supporter said the campaign had sent out no emails about the matter, but that it had sprouted organically on one of the many pro-Paul sites not affiliated with the campaign.
"The idea came up at www.ronpaulforums.com about 3-4 weeks ago to have a "money bomb" today," said this backer. "The idea was to get 100,000 people to donate $100 (for $10 million). That was a little aggressive, of course."
Still, that Paul can bring in nearly $2 million in about 12 hours attests to both his intense online support and the great fundraising possibilties that exist on the Web.
Now over 3 million and climbing.
Well, that's one way to describe them.
If I was an UGH democrat, I would want Ron Paul as the Republican nominee.
Just takes money away from Clinton and Obama.
$mell$ like $oro$.
Hmmm notice that they don’t point out how Paul came up $5.3 million short of his target.
That’s the first thing I noticed. I watched this all night and day, and waited, and waited, and waited...still not one main stream word about his falling short of his “goals”.
Had it been FRed heads, they would’ve dropped leaflets on every major city while blaring “FRed Thompson failed, and he has no fire in his belly” from their newscopters!
