Open Note to Fred Thompson

Senator,

I realize that John McCain is a friend and that you do not do your friends dirty. Unfortunately, Senator McCain is already doing himself dirty on the immigration issue. His backpedaling, blatant Janus-like turns on the border fence, open disdain for those of us who appreciate the rule of law, and shameless demagoguing on this issue is souring people on him more and more every day. These are voters you not only need on your side, but should very much want. These are not, as some would have us believe, a howling mob of racists or bunch of cruel-hearted people who want to strip parents from children and deny the American dream to those who want to work hard to achieve it.

They are people, just like you and me who believe that the American Dream has real value and should be earned fairly. They believe in giving everyone an opportunity so long as everyone is willing to agree to give this country and we who live in it a basic and reasonable amount of respect.

These are the people you have talked about many times before, who are nearly begging for someone to run for President who will represent them. They want someone who is willing to stand boldly and say, without equivocation, that our country means enough to him that he will defend our right to bring people in to our country in an orderly and lawful fashion. They - we - want someone who will stand, even against a friend, and say that blatant demagoguery is wrong. Please, watch a bit of this video and hear those people’s voices. They are the people you have been talking about your whole campaign.

You don’t need to be nasty. You don’t need to go for the jugular. But you do need to speak out now in a way that can not be mistaken for anything but firm resolve and strong leadership. I’m asking you, Senator Thompson, to call out your friend on this issue. Confront what he is doing and name it the wrong it is.

If you can do that, you will win South Carolina. You will win the nomination. You will be President.

Fred will do what he needs to (but probably no more.)

Thompson said one reason he is hesitant about running is his longtime friendship with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). Thompson was one of only four Republican senators to endorse McCain’s 2000 presidential campaign and was an important ally in McCain’s effort to pass campaign-finance reform in 2002.

McCain’s primary motivation appears to be to see his name attached to “historic” achievements, regardless of the principles compromised, hence McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, etc., and he loves being flattered by the press. If he becomes president he will cut deals with the Rats right and left.

Or close the wall up with our Conservative dead!”

Yes, but does he now have that option?

There are no more debates before the voting, and where is Fred to find a public forum on a scale large enough to make a difference?

I know that he can - and hopefully will - use that million bucks that he just raised for ads, but his competitors will runs ads to negate or counter balance those.

Thanks. Allmost a year ago, so apparently he overcame any hesitation because of his friendship with McCain. Politics makes strange bedfellows. I could not vote for McCain if you held a gun to my head, nor would I vote if he was the VP on the ticket.>>.sometimes I think Fred is too emotionally driven, mood swings, doubts—but I keep thinking about that sorry debate in Iowa, refusing to play games and raise his hand, the mark of a guy who is not a people pleaser like the others .

I think Fred started with Huck because Huck is the weakest on so many levels (character problems, loose cannon with his mouth, inexperience problems, economic problems, on and on).

If he tried to attack both before getting any traction he would get lost in the shuffle. By doing what he is doing, he is positioning himself as THE CONSERVATIVE alternative to McCain. After Michigan you will see him escalate the level of attacks against McCain, but until then he is going to do everything he needs to take out the Fraud that is Huck.
