Another seat on the Arizona Corporation Commission soon may be opening as Republican Kris Mayes announced Tuesday that she is interested in making a run for U.S. Congress in District 1.
Mayes' announcement does not come a surprise to most. In the past month, those close to her and her staff have mentioned the run "could be eminent." She has formed an exploratory committee, but has not filed for candidacy listing with the Arizona Clean Elections Commission.
Former Arizona Congressman Matt Salmon and Malcolm Barrett, chairman of the National Propane Gas Association and a Prescott native like Mayes, have pledged their support for her run. Barrett will serve as her finance chairman.
"The district deserves a candidate who will work hard before and after the election, in Arizona and Washington D.C.," Mayes said in a prepared statement. "I hope the exploratory process yields the kind of support already expressed by Matt Salmon, Malcolm Barrett and others," she added.

Mays’ list of supporters is a good sign. And she sounds like she’d be a strong candidate in the general election.
Is this Rick’s seat?
Yep, Rick Renzi, the future liscence plate maker.
Wasn’t there already a top-notch, solidly conservative female candidate running in the AZ-01? Or did Sidney (sp?) Hay drop out?
Sydney Hay is still running, and so is state Representative Lucy Mason.
IIRC, Mayes is a RINO who was “appointed” to the CC by Butch Napolitano. Sydney Hay is the one we’re backing.
What is he accused of?
A RINO?
In the words of the immortal Emily Litella, “Nevermind.”
He’s accused of fraud, extortion, concealing transactions from Congress, and embezzlement.
If Napolitano appointed her to anything at all, that’s bad, but why would Matt Salmon be supporting a RINO?
Then again, I don’t think there was anyting wrong with Hay’s pedigree, and IIRC she was fairly well known and well liked in the district, so I’d still lean towards her.
Ouch, thanks. You think there’s any truth to it?
Maybe Salmon is backing her because of statewide viability ? But she’s still is lacking for credentials. Mayes was one of those weak RINOs that some presumed would be defeated in a primary for the CC seat she is holding (I believe she conveniently switched from Democrat prior to the appointment), but she prevailed because of a divided field, and the CC just hasn’t elected a Democrat since the ‘90s.
There probably is. The justice department has been investigating him for a while, and he has been indicted by the U.S. Attorney.
Still waiting for the Bush DOJ to indict some democrat scum too. A healthy percentage of them must be crooked enough to prove it.
