The Patriot Room ^ | June 24, 2008 | Bill Dupray

Bill Kristol and John Bolton, in separate interviews, seem to be leaking a Bush plan to take out Iranian nuclear facilities before he leaves office. If it is done before the election, Obama is sunk.

Why would Mr. Obama be “sunk” if it’s done before the election?

Sink Obama? I would venture a guess that if Bush launched an attack on Iran prior to the election, McCain should just endorse Obama and suspend his campaign. It would virtually assure Obama’s victory.

Agreed. If Bush does bomb Iran it will be shortly after the election with hopefully McCain about to take over the helm.

OBAMA is sunk anyway! B.O. uses DHAKKAR in copious amounts to drown out his stench according to those within a smell’s distance. But you are right, when B.O. HUSSEIN sides with IM NUTJOB as a fellow Muslim, even the brainless, wacko, mental eunuchs who call themselves Demorats will have to pause at their own stupidity.

1) It may have to be done.
2) It will bring $12 a gallon gas.
3) Why would it help McCain? The voters are idiots who will just be upset their gas went up.

I doubt that the U.S. will provide much more than support and intel to the Israelis. It’s going to be an all-star (Star of David) Show, with the IDF in charge.

I think such a deeply impactful direct action, immediately followed by the normal disruption of the change of command, would be something that President Bush is unlikely to do, unless McCain wins and he is involved in the lead-up.

I expect that he’ll continue to prep the field, but leave any direct action for the next President to act on. Unless of course, there’s some crisis moment that develops between now and then. Then I suppose just about anything can happen.

The bigger question I think is about what Iran will do between now and then. If anything, they may try to disrupt and influence the U.S. election by taking some direct action of their own in the weeks just before. Lots of possibilities there, and none of them are very good.

Unless they use nukes... it'll be a half-a$$ job. If they attack conventionally... we'll be the first targets Iran lashes out at... and then we'll have to finish the job.

I think you're probably right. Heck... they might act any time, even without our help. They might try to do it that way in order to give us some plausible distance from whatever they do.

Does anybody have a map that shows more or less where in Iran the probable targeted sites are?

Iran’s a big place, and much of it is simply too far for Israel to get to, and with a whole lot of hostile territory to fly over in order to get there. They’d almost have to launch an attack from somewhere else, but I can’t imagine where. I don’t think we’d let them use Iraq. A shooting war along the Iran/Iraq border would really mess things up.

My guess is that Bush would have Israel go in before the election, so that when Iran flips its lid and all hell (actual and potential) breaks loose, voters will choose the tested McCain and Obama will be sunk.

I would not say that it would assure a Obama victory.... what is you basis for that comment....

what is more interesting is that comments that bolton has made about Israel attacking Iran between the election and inauguration... i can see Israel doing that just to force whom ever is elected to keep America on the international stage a security and stabilization force. just my opinion no fact...

Neither of whom should be in a position to know. I think this is more like wishful thinking on their part.

The “this” he is referring to is an Israeli raid on Iran. If Iran strikes out against the U.S. directly, it gives Bush a pretext to “bring it on”.

He’s not talking about a preemptive U.S. raid on Iran, rather a reaction to an Iranian attack on U.S. forces. If the Iranians can be provoked into attacking U.S. forces prior to the election, he thinks it will benefit McCain. I suppose the Israelis and Iranians know that too.

Johnny said:

"Unless they use nukes... it'll be a half-a$$ job. If they attack conventionally... we'll be the first targets Iran lashes out at... and then we'll have to finish the job."

I would be surprised if Israel did NOT use nukes on Iran. At this point in time, Iran is the most belligerent nation in that region and more importantly the most belligerent nation with substantial weapons to stir up trouble. Syria may pose a threat, but they lack the will or the leadership, as a casual review of President Asshat's performance in Damascus will demonstrate.

If Israel does decide to take out Iran, they won't want to do a partial job, they will want to pull out all the stops because they will be doing more than destroying Iran's budding nuclear capability, they will be sending a message to the rest of the region as well, and the message will be "you want some of this? GET SOME!"

It would be my expectation that an Israeli strike on Iran would most likely provoke some form of Russian retaliation which could well take the form of military reprisals. If that happens, all bets are off.

An interesting scenario: IF the above hypothetical Israel-Russian confrontation were to take place in the wake of an Israeli pre-emptive strike on Iran, if an Obama-lama-ding-dong Administration is in the White House, the Israelis might discover that they will NOT be able to depend on the United States as in the past, and a potential President Obama might well align America with the Arab states in the region so as not to condone what would be labeled 'Israeli aggression', in addition to not endangering the flow of oil from the region (assuming it had not already been shut down).

So without the U.S. backing Israel, and the Russians breathing down their neck, that would seem to be the prelude to the prophetic Gog-Magog battle spoken of in the Bible, and in that yet to be fought battle, it is written that Almighty God Himself will fight on behalf of Israel, and that her enemies will be thrown back in the most astounding military 'shock and awe' demonstration ever seen, and there will be no doubt that it is God who has intervened.

We live in interesting times, my FRiends.

Even so, come Lord Jesus.

We're at the point where Michael Corleone decides to take out Brazini, Tataglia, Strachi... etc. The alternative is nuclear blackmail from the Mullah's and their flying monkeys... where the west loses a city month until our economies shut down.

All the military might we have is worthless... unless we have the will to use it

While it’s not really possible to predict, your scenario is as likely as any other. This can go down in any one of dozens of different ways, and I don’t think any of them end with the words “...and they all lived happily ever after”. Excepting of course, the version with the Lord Returning. That’s got some charm to it. :-)

But any way you slice it, lots and lots of people are going to die. We just don’t know how many of each yet.

Since the distances are so great, one option for Israel to strike first, but with special forces on the ground instead of airstrikes. Logistically, it’s a nightmare but it’s do-able. Several teams, one for each site that needs hit, staged somewhere off the area of the Gulf of Oman... sneak through the lesser populated areas, perhaps over weeks... and all hit at once.

Of course, it’s one for Mission Impossible. Getting back out is dicey. Easy for the whole thing to fail if one team is compromised. Lots of reasons not to do it that way.

Oh heck... I just discovered that Israel has a few submarines that can carry cruise missiles. That changes the math entirely...
