Outgoing Missouri Treasurer Sarah Steelman, who lost a bruising Republican primary for governor to Kenny Hulshof, said this afternoon she will take a look at running for the seat vacated by Sen. Kit Bond in 2010.
Bond announced in the Missouri House Chambers this morning that he will not run for re-election. Bond and Steelman have been at odds lately. Bond endorsed Hulshof in the primary, and Steelman wrote a letter to the Department of Justice to inform investigators of a conversation she had with Bond concerning the ousting of U.S. attorney Todd Graves.
Steelman today praised Bond for his service, but made it clear they don’t see eye to eye on policy.
“The people of Missouri and all over the country are seeking a different direction from Washington,” Steelman told the Post-Dispatch. Referring to the economic doldrums the country is in, Steelman said, “We can see the consequences now of the actions taken by Congress.”
In her run for governor, Steelman pounded Hulshof over his support of congressional earmarks, which have long been supported by Bond. Her campaign had been run by Republican political consultant Jeff Roe, who conflicted with Bond aide Jason Van Eaton when Roe worked in Washington, D.C. for Congressman Sam Graves.
Steelman said she heard about Bond’s decision this morning and was surprised. She said she thought he would run again in 2010.
Now, she’s looking at the seat.
“I’m thinking about it,” she said. “I’m watching what happens. I’ll give it some serious thought. I do think Missourians are ready to go in a new direction in Washington.”

Sarah Steelman is a great lady and she’d make a great Senator if she runs. I just hope the Missouri GOP doesn’t do to her what the New Jersey GOP did to Brett Schundler in 2001.

Very much so. One can also say she’s a Sarah Palin Republican.

LOL! Yeah, I am thrilled about the prospect of Steelman running for the Senate! She is what we need in a Senator!
I looked at the primary results map on the Missouri Secretary of State website between Steelman and Hulshof.
Steelman did very well in most areas of the state: she took most of southwest Missouri (including Springfield), St. Louis city, most of the Kansas City metropolitan area (including the city) and other parts of the state.
The primary race was very close. She lost by like only 14,000 votes. The only reason Hulshof won was because of the St. Louis suburbs, northeast Missouri and southeast Missouri.
We need reform. Steelman is the same type of candidate that Palin is. We need her and we need her badly. I don’t want a clone of Claire McCaskill as our next senator.
There are rumors that Robin Carnahan will be running on the Democratic side. We don’t need another Carnahan either.
I think (and hope) Steelman will do well against Carnahan.

Good, and she won in a statewide election. That’s a good thing.
Yep, the trial lawyers’ best friend on the Republican side is good old Sarah. Just get her nominated, much like McCain, and the big supporters from across the aisle will vote for a real Democrat, not just a trial-lawyer sell-out. The serious conservatives know the difference, ergo her loss to Hulshof last summer. She’s a divisive trouble-maker and a guarantee that Robin Carnahan is the next senator from Missouri.

I think us “serious conservatives” in Missouri are sick and tired of the corruption, bribing and scandals that have plagued the state GOP.
Steelman is a “Sarah Palin-type” conservative. We need her in office. Just because the state GOP leadership hates her, doesn’t mean that the people do.
As I said in a previous post: during the primary she got so much support from the Springfield and Kansas City areas and also won the city of St. Louis. She is very popular.
It would be foolish to nominate Hulshof for the Senate race. He lost big time in the governor’s race.
We need a “new breed of conservative Republicans,” so to speak, and that includes people like Palin and Steelman.

Sarah is a good name for a Republican obviously.
Hulshof’s loss to Nixon precludes his nomination. Steelman is an friend of the trial lawyers. They love her and will spend money to see her nominated—and watch her lose to their first choice, a Democrat. She’s no Sarah Palin. If Sarah Steelman were a Sarah Palin clone, I would lose ALL respect for Sarah Palin.
