Conservatives: Would you vote for this man for President?

Posted on 05/14/2009 7:54:47 AM PDT by MadIsh32

Here goes: This presidential candidate talks pro-life, but has a mixed record on abortion, including passing legislation as governor removing restrictions on abortion. In addition, the person he wants as VP is outspoken in his support of pro-choice, warning against candidates who would throw women back into back alley clinics. He talks about Christian faith, but also openly admits he very rarely goes to church. He has been a supporter of 2nd amendment rights, but also openly endorsed the Brady Bill. He wants to balance the budget partly by tax cuts, but mostly by cutting spending back to around 19% OF GDP (roughly what it was back in the 60s). He also wants a committee to oversee and review gov't regulations, and either repeal, scale back, or allow regulations based on cost benefit analyses.

A candidate for president in 2012 has already chosen his VP? :)

That’s what I was thinking. But I stand by my “no” based on the little info that was given. With Reagan there was an ocean of other information and the context of the times are different.

I’d have to know the whole story on these issues this nameless man supports. For instance, governors sign lots of things they disagree with simply because the legislature produces a veto proof majority.

I voted for this guy twice. You left out his love of American greatness, his ability to articulate American values and his hatred of totalitarianism. I wish there was someone like that we could vote for.

He has been a supporter of 2nd amendment rights, but also openly endorsed the Brady Bill.

The Brady Bill of course wasn't an issue during Reagan's first run in 1980. And the fact that he supported Sarah Brady after the terrible pain and suffering her husband suffered while in service too Reagan is understandable.

A candidate in 1980 is much different than a candidate in 2012.

Whats the catch?
As written, no I would not vote for that person. To many things I am against. I am sure there is more to the story we are missing here. I would be a fool to vote someone for POTUS with so little facts.

I’ve told people that the only time I ever voted FOR a presidential candidate (as opposed to “against” his opponent) was Reagan, in the 2000 election.

If you get my drift.

Of course it’s Reagan. Liberal Republicans love to distort his record to prop up their ‘moderate’ favorites.

I think you’d have to tell us who it is first, so that we could examine your statements of this candidate’s attributes.

You just described Ronald Regan. BUT you imply by your snarky style that Regan was STILL in favor of abortion when he ran for president. He most definitely was NOT. Moreover, he was espusing conservative principles of smaller government and lower taxes to go along with a beefed up military. That was enough for me.

Voted for Regan not Bush

Ronald Reagan was a regular churchgoer all his life before entering the White House.
