Pence to Iowa
Politico ^ | June 29, 2009 | Glenn Thrush

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) -- the third-ranking member of the House -- is the latest Republican with (possible) national ambitions to head off to Iowa for a political event.

Pence, who is due to make an as-yet unspecified appearance in Cedar Rapids on July 24th, isn't on the short list of 2012 GOP candidates, but MSNBC and other outlets have predicted he'll be in the mix.

Nevada Sen. John Ensign was in northwest Iowa in early June - shortly before his career imploded -- followed by Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who was in Des Moines on Thursday.

Pence isn’t presidential material. He should run for Senate or get chosen for VP.

We should let him know before he wastes much time on this. Nobody here cares much about this type of stuff. Look at the number of views.

I like Mike Pence a great deal. He is right. However, he needs leadership experience, like governor, to cement his credentials as bona fide conservative.

It is easy to be conservative in the House.

What a great system, where Democrats in Iowa and New Hampshire get to select the Republican’s nominee, before Democrats in other states even get the chance to vote on the Republican nominee.

yeah, it’s true.
At this point, the D.C. establishment is so hooked up with the Iowa and NH activists, both of these events are D.C. primaries. That is why they don’t want rotating first states. The D.C. could not dominate the first primary if it were held in a random state. (I am exaggerating of course.)

Excuse me? Did these "lack of credentials" stop the TOTUS traitor from seeking the presidency? A man like Mike Pence is exactly what this country needs.

We criticized Obama for his lack of executive experience. If we supported Pence, we would be hypocrites.

I am not a liberal, whose beliefs waver based on the candidate-of-the-day.

I feel Mike Pence would have a far better chance if he proved himself in an executive position.

Bayh is a tough nut to crack. Obviously a family name in Indiana. I was actually hoping to see Bayh run for the President on the Dem side, but Hillary's war chest was too much for him.

I do like Pence and I have seen him speak on the floor several times. I think 2012 is going to be wide open and a dark horse like Pence may make waves in Republican primary.

Bayh was very conservative when he was governor of Indiana...Then he went to DC had problems raising the money he thought he needed to run, stay in office....and during the CLinton years his warchest was augmented considerably by the CLINTON PACS.

He no longer has that source, so in December he tried of organize a group in the Senate similar to the Blue DOgs in the House.....Get back in with the people of Indiana.
I don’t trust him one little bit.....Bayh is only looking out for Bayh.

No doubt. We all knew which way the political wind was blowing when Evan Bayh went to New Hampshire (pretty much in the bag for the Democrats) and if I had to pick a Democrat to be President, I felt more comfortable with Bayh.

But concur completely with what you say. You really have to question any governor who steps down to be Senator IMO.

We have a two term limit on our GOV. He’d served his two terms, before moving on to the senate.....As Our Man Mitch has. Rumor is that Lugar will be retiring and Mitch will run in his place...IIRC Mitch got over 80% of the vote this past election.

Tracking on the term limits, but to me, going from Governor to Senator is a step down and I always question legislators that have done this. Doesn’t mean that they are all bad or do it for the wrong reasons, but the perception is you are going from the Majors to the Minors.

Governors in Indiana rule for eight years at the most....Senators in Indiana have traditionally governed for life......20,30,40 years.

Birch Bayh was a Senator right? Or was he also Governor/Senator as well?

Son followed in his father’s footsteps....Took over his fathers Senate seat.

In Indiana, Mayor or Mayor of Indianapolis and/or governor often proceeds DC office.

Dan Quayle knocked off Birch Bayh in 1980. Reagan’s coattails helped a lot. If we find a quality candidate and the political atmosphere improves for us, then we may be able to knock off Evan Bayh.
