Councilman Robin Engel said he expects to make a decision about whether or not to enter the race by Labor Day.

Engel represents the 22nd District, which includes Fern Creek, Jeffersontown and Highview.

In his last race for Metro Council, the Republican ran unopposed in a district with a majority of registered Democratic voters.

Engel said he's met with party leaders to discuss entering the race, including Jefferson County Republican Party Chairman Brad Cummings.

So far, Engel hasn't made a decision.

I’m surprised that the article didn’t name the incumbent that Engel is thinking of running against. That would be John Yarmouth of Kentucky.

I think they meant the 2nd district.

3rd, sorry. I have no idea where they got “22nd” from.

I assume that the 22nd is Engel’s city council district.

Losing Anne Northup was a serious blow for Louisville. Her 18-point loss in the ‘08 rematch with Yarmuth was probably the death knell for her political career. I don’t know about this Councilman, but we do need a first-tier recruit here (and against Chandler, too). KY should have an all-GOP delegation (so now should WV for that matter).

We had a top-tier challenger in Erwin Roberts running last year, but his reserve unit was activated and sent abroad and he had to leave the race, to be replaced by Anne Northup.

It looks like 2010 will be quite different from 2006 or 2008. We can win the district back next year.

I though Northup in a rematch would be stronger than anyone else.

Wrong obviously. She ran behind McCain who got 43%, black turnout obviously is the difference between that and Bush’s narrow loses in the district.

Failed ‘98 Senate nominee Scottie Basesler was crushed like an ant when he tried to take his former seat from Ernie Fletcher in 2000. I guess KY doesn’t like to dwell on the past.

Not necessarily, sometimes there have been comebacks. When then-Lt. Gov. Steve Beshear had his ascent to the Governorship squashed in ‘87, breaking what was the usual procedure for Governors prerequisite to winning, he went on to get squashed again by Mitch McConnell by 13% (even as Bubba won the state), and looked like a two-time loser. But yet he tried again and won the Governorship in ‘07.

Other examples on the GOP side like Gene Snyder (elected in ‘62 in central Louisville, lost in the LBJ landslide, made a comeback in an adjacent Northern KY district in ‘66).

Sen. John Sherman Cooper who won not just once, not twice, but three separate occasions (having been defeated after winning two interim terms in the same line, due to a resignation and two deaths, the latter of which were his opponents who beat him and promptly died, one of which included the former Vice-President, Alben Barkley, making his triumphant return in 1954 - Cooper had the seat back by ‘56 - holding it until his voluntary retirement in ‘72).

John Robsion, Sr. was another, who held a solid GOP Eastern KY district, but took the risky move in 1930 by the Governor to accept an appointment to the Senate (which he promptly lost, but surprisingly, only by a scant 5%). He waited for the drastic reconfiguration of the state’s House seats (when the state lost 2) for 1934, and got his old (albeit augmented and renumbered from 11th to 9th) seat back again, serving until he died in ‘48. 4 years later, his same name son won the Louisville district after Thruston Morton won the other Senate seat (both he and Cooper won the same year), a distance from his dad’s Eastern district, holding it until he was a casualty of the ‘58 debacle (which he then decided to try to take a run for Governor in ‘59, promptly losing. He opted not to run for office again).
