Scott Brown knows he faces an uphill battle as a Republican seeking to fill Ted Kennedys U.S. Senate seat.
Until last week, when Jack E. Robinson filed nomination papers, Brown was the only member of the GOP seeking the seat, which is also the goal of four Democrats.
Although the seat has been in Democratic hands since the 1950s, and more than a decade has passed since Massachusetts voters sent a Republican to Congress, Brown, one of just five Republicans in the state Senate, said there is no inevitability to a Democrat victory.
This isnt a Democratic seat; its a seat of the people of Massachusetts, said Brown, 50, whose victory in a 2004 special election to fill a state Senate seat vacated by a Democrat was one of the last Republican legislative victories.
Brown has easily held the seat since, winning by a 59-41 percent margin in 2008 that gathered more votes in his district than Barack Obama.

Normally, I would write this off as hopeless. But given the current environment, I think we have a shot.
Stranger things have happened. Given the mess that Patrick has made of the place, they may be ready for a change. But those MA Dems are a thickheaded lot when it comes to figuring out where their problems come from.
You’re more optimistic and I am.
However, if Scott Brown did win, when WOW, 2010 might just be the biggest blowout since...I don’t know when. If a Republican won the seat, Obama might as well order the boxes and schedule the moving truck, he’s finished, Walter Mondale/George McGovern style. Hell, he wouldn’t even win a single state.
Special elections tend to have turnout not typical of the electorate as a whole. Combine that with the political environment and a less-than-inspiring DemocRAT field, and it’s not impossible.
I hope he pulls it off!
We need the Democrat primary to get really nasty *and* some sort of miracle for Brown to have a chance, but he’s as strong a candidate as we can hope for and, at the very least, it will give him the exposure he needs to run for Governor or some other high office in the future.
Has there been any polling for this race? All I’ve seen are rat primary polls.
There was one done last month.

Scott Brown has potential, but he needs funding to increase his name I.D.
Coakley obviously has more name ID then any other candidate. Being a statewide official this is not surprising.
Coakley seems like an unappealing candidate to me, and I’ve read that she’s not a particularly good lawyer. I think that Brown would have a shot against her, especially if the ‘Rat primary becomes contentious.
I’m surprised more rats didn’t run for this. They’re been waiting over 20 years for a Senate vacancy. Only 2 rat elected officials.
Coakley
Crapuano
The co-owner of the Celtics
and some rich activist creep.
Maybe a second democrat could be talked into running as an independent....That seems to be how the Rats win in predominately “R” districts.
