Matthews on Griffith’s flip: The GOP is sort of the party of the confederacy now, huh? (w/Video)

Allahpundit: Via Weasel Zippers. The money line: “Are you going to keep building your party with Dixiecrats, ex-Democrats, who think the Democratic party is too mainstream?” Savor that last word, as it suggests that a party pushing a signature bill that’s now -20 in net approval in some polls is the one that speaks for the great “mainstream.” The idea of a liberal silent majority goes hand in hand with the idea of the GOP as a radical collective, which is where the confederacy meme comes in here. Nothing new for “Hardball”: Kathleen Parker pushed that smear herself back in August during an especially insulting segment on why Palin fares well in the south while Obama doesn’t, but it’s a treat to see it paired this time with a blind assertion that the disintegrating Democrats are the true party o’ the people.

Watch Kathleen Parker come slinking back when the Dems implode. As for Chrissy, what more needs to be said?

Instead of Matthews expounding his demagogic fantasies, why doesn’t he talk about the real Confederacy? The Confederate States were run by former Democratic members of the U.S. Congress. They had the backing of many northern Democrats, the more notorious of whom were the Copperheads, who secretly connived with the Confederacy. Indeed, the Democratic Party had been the party of slaveholders since its founding. Its representatives in Congress argued for the expansion of slavery and the Fugitive Slave Law. The Democratic Party was also the party of segregation, Jim Crow laws, and lynching.

As for Matthews, he is the same thing he’s always been - a cheap Democratic hack.

The South shall rise again. Along with the North, the West, and th Middle. The only parts of the country the dimmyrats are likely to keep are the left coast and parts of New England. All the rest is coming our way on a daily basis.

Wow, they keep climbing out on even more tenuous limbs in an effort to see themselves as normal. When that limb breaks, down will come baby, cradle and all. Why anyone listens to this fairy freak is beyond me.

Hey, Matthews! It’s a different confederacy that applies here - the one Democratic insider/pollster Pat Caddell spoke about on 27 November 2000:

“(The Democratic Party)...has become no longer a party of principles, but has been hijacked by a confederacy of gangsters who need to take power by whatever means and whatever canards they can.”

Mr. Caddell said this on a show called Hardball.

If more people watched his show, I guess they’d be outraged. But to be honest, I think Spongebob Squarepants draws a bigger (and intellectually superior) audience than Chris Matthews.

Well...Matthews is right about one thing....Southern whites are about all is left anymore that can be counted on as a majority where they live

that and a few Western rural states

and Indiana on occasion...

the New Confederacy

is it not weird how much effect immigration bloodlines over the centuries still impact so much of today?

the Scots-Irish and English and Huguenot predominance down here still drive how whites think and it does indeed go back from the beginning

whereas up north the English influence has been erased by eastern Europeans and Scandinavians and Germans and later Jews and latinos

and the stark differences show between the regions

blacks are sorta just caught in the middle

You have a very accurate analysis. Matthews is proving he shoots from the hip and has no knowledge of history. He is playing to the same group in the population who slept through history class and cheated on their tests.

Well. We are. Trent Lott himself said that if President Davis were alive today he’d be a Republican and he would.

Believing that Lincoln was a tyrannical dictator who did great harm to America and being a Republican in 2009 are not mutually exclusive. If Lincoln were alive today he would be among the most liberal of Democrats and he probably would have been going door to door with an Obama t-shirt on his back.

By the same token if Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and all the rest were alive today they would definitely be Republicans. That’s the thing. The parties switched. There was a time when the GOP was the northern liberal party and hated the down home values we in the South stand for while the Democrats stood up for those values.

Today, it is the reverse as the GOP is the party that defends our Southern way of life while the Democrats advocate a socialist reconstruction.

Yeah and the confederate states are so awful that we don’t have an influx of northeners coming down here to enjoy our more conservative governments and lower taxes. Then once they get here they try really hard to do the same thing to us, they did to themselves.... Sorry I’m venting. ;)

Funny, but a southern seperatist movement party would be VERY popular.

Excellent post...it’s the south bashers here who are without a clue...preening lot they are.

Politics is a serpentine route.

few straight lines of progression

this notion that today’s Dems are just like the Dems of 1866 is insane...

they have more in common with the Radical Republicans of that day..

to be fair...and I know some...there are Yankees who come here to be with us because they want to join us.

i know many whites from Michigan in particular who love to be with white Southerners and cherish our provincialism

that said...some do not as is evidenced by the steady barrage of anti-southern sentiment even on a “conservative” forum by self professed Yankees here

here in Nashville, we have a bigger issue with Kalifornia folks

and some Yankee black move south too just because it’s better all around..
