Wolf Faces Republican Primary Challenger

Sterling resident Jim Trautz has decided to take on 30-year incumbent U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10) for the Republican Party's nomination in Virginia 10th congressional district, which includes all or parts of McLean, Great Falls, Herndon, Oak Hill, Vienna, Chantilly and Centreville.
According to the candidate's Web site, Trautz is a retired Naval officer and ordained minister who also managed a "multi-million dollar program" as a private defense contractor. A father of six children, he has lived in Virginia for 25 years.
Trautz is critical of Wolf's 2009 vote in support of federal assistance and funding for financial institutions through the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). The challenger said he supports programs like a national sales tax, based on consumption, as opposed to an income tax.
Wolf has been popular with voters. In a 2008 Republican primary, he won 91.73 percent of the vote to challenger Vern McKinley's 8.26 percent of the vote.
In 2008, Wolf shared a ballot with President Barack Obama (D) and, though Obama won the 10th district in the presidential race by five percentage points, Wolf still beat well-funded Democratic opponent Judy Feder by 20 percentage points, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections.
I’m not too familiar with Frank. He does appear to be a fairly strong conservative when taking a cursory glance at his record.

I personally think it is counter productive. We have too much work to do without kicking out or weakening fairly reliable conservative Republicans.
I’m sticking with Wolf.
If he’s a proven reliable Republican, why change.
Right, he’s definitely not a RINO of the McCain variety.
I worked in Frank’s first successful campaign in 1980 (he had run unsuccessfully against a ‘Rat known as “Pink Joe” Fisher in 1976 and 1978). Frank is a great guy. He deserves to stay in Congress as long as he wants to.
Never even a whiff of scandal. He stays away from all the night-life and junkets.
I’d still say the one problem with Wolf is longevity. He’s been in Congress 30 years. At some point, you start to get stale.
As a constituent of Frank Wolfe, he will always have my enduring admiration. He was one of a very few republicans who had the guts to vote against granting China preferred nation trading status during the Clinton administration...not because of ‘trade’ issues but rather because of the abysmal human rights record of the commies and because he recognized that China was more than a trade competitor-—he saw it for what is has long been-—an enemy. He’s also been vocal, though seldom heard unfortunately, about human rights in Cuba, Saudi Arabia, et al. He’s a good man and well principled.
He’s definitely one of the good guys. As a believer in Jefferson’s citizen legislature and self-imposed term limits, I tend to agree there’s a point when it’s time for an old-timer to move on. In Frank’s case, since he hasn’t caught Potomac Fever and gone soft on conservative principles, he deserves another term.

Wolf is rambling on and on...some kind of issue about a study on Afghanistan...
That was embarrassing, he was asked a question about earmarks and proceeded to filibuster about Afghanistan.
And that last bit about feet of clay?
This guy is scary. And it sounds like we had a good chance to replace him this year.
OMG, he came off like a complete mental case. I was embarrassed he was a Republican.
I wonder if he’s taking some sort of medication. He does tend to get wound up on the stump but he always has a point and is able to back it up in a coherent fashion. He’s been passionate but always understandable. Makes me think it’s a medication dosage snafu.
