Sarah Palin's Strengths and Weaknesses Looking at 2012
Suite101 ^ | September 2, 2010 | Michael Streich

Although Sarah Palin is successfully building a network of supporters, she has also aliened some Republicans whose help she will need if she runs in 2012.

Sarah Palin would do well to remember the year 1870. That was the year the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution was adopted. Significantly, it states that the right to vote “shall not be denied or abridged…on the account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” It did not include the word “gender.” Women would have to wait until the Nineteenth Amendment, adopted in 1920. The 1870 Fifteenth Amendment demoralized the American women’s movement whose leaders had long fought for emancipation, thinking that they also would finally be given the right to vote. The same thing can happen, albeit in a different context, in the 2012 Republican quest for the White House. Sarah Palin and her Mama Grizzlies could easily be passed over by the old boys club, the party stalwarts.

Palin’s Possible Preparation for a 2012 White House Bid If Sarah Palin has designs on the White House in 2012, she has done everything right, capitalizing on the conservative shift in American politics. Joe Miller’s stunning defeat of Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski in the Republican primary August 31, 2010 might not have been possible without last minute appeals from Palin. Palin’s endorsements have helped a number of candidates in the primary season. In the process, she developed a network of supporters should she announce her candidacy for 2012.

Palin’s second book, America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag is scheduled for release on November 23, 2010. Two weeks after the publication of her first book, Going Rogue, two million copies had been sold in what The Daily Beast referred to as “Palin’s Gold Mine.” Her estimated net worth since resigning the governorship of Alaska is said to be between 12-13 million dollars. Separately, she started a PAC.

Sarah Palin’s Potential Liabilities as a Republican Candidate

Palin’s association with the Tea Party movement paints her as an ultra conservative, even though the label may not be true. She refers to herself and those she endorses as “commonsense conservatives.” But in the process, Palin has had a hand in dividing the Republican Party, finding numerous Republicans too liberal. Her endorsements often conflict with those of Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney as in the Georgia primary where Palin-endorsed Karen Handel lost.

Some Americans see her as quitter after resigning as Alaska’s governor. Others recall her dismal television interviews while running for the vice presidency. She studiously avoids interviews on high profile news shows like “Meet the Press,” preferring to communicate through Facebook and her tweets. That will not be enough to clinch a primary victory.

The Strengths of Sarah Palin

Despite obstacles, however, Sarah Palin has attained media celebrity status, appealing especially to the Republican Mama Grizzlies. Her speeches are delivered with greater poise than during the 2008 campaign and she has cloaked herself in the red-white-and blue at a time many Americans are rallying behind American troops fighting in the Middle East.

At the August 28, 2010 “Restoring Honor” rally in Washington, Palin spoke about restoring America, telling the audience, “You have the same steel spine and the moral courage of Washington and Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr.” Capitalizing on opposition to the Ground Zero Islamic Center, she was one of the first national leaders to call for the project’s halt.

In America, politicians can be made and unmade quickly. Their performance polls are tied to the economy which is the number one issue for most voters in contemporary America. If she decides to become a candidate, Palin will, of necessity, have to provide specific resolutions to the myriad of problems, both domestically and internationally. Appearing at rallies and Facebook posts will not be enough.

She turned some Republicans into aliens? That's magic there!

Just because no one has ever won the nomination that way before doesn't mean it can't be done. She came **this** close to derailing ObamaCare with a Tweet, IIRC. After that, they had to resort to the Louisiana Purchase, the Cornhusker Kickback and other bribes to ram it through, or am I remembering it incorrectly? BTW, who still watches the Sunday morning news shows?

Yep she has been steam-rolling RINO’s which does tick-off the Republican ruling class. I say bravo.

Bravo on her part. I say screw Meet the Press. All they are is part of the kneepad msm.

"Her endorsements often conflict with those of Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney"

Who cares what ineligible Romney wants or schemes?
The carpetbagging fascist has already instituted
gay marriage, RomneyCARE, and covered up the BIG DIG.

Given that he is a proven bad governor and backstabber,
he should be ignored, if not thrown out.

Fact: The McCain/Palin ticket was up ++4 to 10 pts. in some polls, days prior to the election.
So rather than helping the GOP, Romney and
TeamROMNEY decided …… to attack Gov. Palin to throw Election2008.

"Frum was indeed a critic of Palin, calling her nomination a "huge mistake" during an October 13 (2008, weeks before the election) Early Show appearance."

David Frum: "Two of our most plausible candidates for president in 2012 are leading Mormons: Mitt Romney and Utah governor Jon Huntsman."

David Frum: "I have a lot of regard for Mitt Romney as a man and politician… I will support him without qualm."

Late in October, The American Spectator's The Prowler revealed:
"Former Mitt Romney presidential campaign staffers…
have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters, seeking to diminish her standing after the election.
'Sarah Palin is a lightweight, she won't be the first, not even the third, person people will think of when it comes to 2012,'
says one former Romney aide…
'The only serious candidate ready to challenge to lead the Republican Party is Mitt Romney.
"Some former Romney aides were behind the recent leaks to media, including CNN, that Governor Sarah Palin was a 'diva' and was going off message intentionally."

The Palmetto Scoop reported: "One of the first stories to hit the national airwaves was
the claim of a major internal strife between close McCain aides and the folks handling his running mate Sarah Palin."
"I’m told by very good sources that this was indeed the case and that a rift had developed, but it was between Palin’s people and the staffers brought on from the failed presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, not McCain aides."
"The sources said nearly 80 percent of Romney’s former staff was absorbed by McCain and these individuals were responsible for what amounts to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."
… aides loyal to Romney inside the McCain campaign, said The Scoop, reportedly saw
that Palin would be a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 or 2016, which made her a threat to another presidential quest by Romney.

Erick Erickson, who organized Operation Leper, said:
"These staffers are now out trying to finish her off ….hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."

"Who's the Palin Leaker from the McCain Campaign?
National Review Online The publication of a Vanity Fair profile of Sarah Palin
appears to have opened old wounds in the McCain campaign.
... the source of the “Diva” leak was Nicolle Wallace’s husband."

Kathleen Parker: "[I]t is increasingly clear that Palin is a problem." "Parker ... says something publicly that many of us have thought privately
but lacked the courage to say out loud - Palin should step down:"

"Kathleen Parker: After Interviews, Palin Should Bow Out"

Kathleen Parker: "Romney would bring more than squeaky clean qualifications
and youthful good looks to the ticket.
Romney would seem a logical choice."

"Parker: Romney raised bar on freedoms"
Kathleen Parker: "If Kennedy's speech was an important landmark in American political history,
Romney's was surpassing. With heartfelt humility and poetic eloquence,
he tracked the nation's struggle with and for freedom."

Staggering bigotry of Kathleen Parker - UPDATED"

Whoever penned this doesn’t understand the dynamic rolling across the country. We are FED UP with party big-wigs and political stalwarts.

Washington DC has ran this country into the ground. We need someone from OUTSIDE of Washington to fix it.

This guy doesn’t get it.

Sarah Palin doesn’t have much choice but to work outside the existing system. The rot is so extensive in the GOP and media that they can’t deliver, even if they wanted to. Which in Sarah Palin’s case, they don’t.

Romney endorsed Handel after she was the leader in the primary. This is one of the least intelligent articles, written by one of the least informed writers, that I have read recently.

Sarah Palin’s Weaknesses Looking at 2012.

She will have to ditch McAmnesty long before 2012, or those of us who care about the border will campain against her.

This is not negotiable, any more than Rudy’s Sonewall Veteran’s Association chairmanship was something that could be overlooked.

So you really aren't up to debating the actual position of whether the borders should be closed, and whether only non criminals should be allowed in?

That tells everyone here exactly how much intellectual capacity and integrity you bring to the table.

The tactics you personally are employing haven't worked well for the Mittbots, and they won't work for you either.

I did not attack Mrs. Palin on a personal level. I did not allege something that can not be proven.

She can continue to embrace McAmnesty/Feingold or not (Her choice) but neither you nor anyone else will prevent that from being both a legitimate and important issue.

Are you capable of comprehending that?

If you want to say it doesn't matter, feel free to explain why you think it does not.

I was in the Air Force back in the late 70's. It wasn't a very good time to be in the military then. We were constantly short of aircraft parts and even fuel due to our "budget" at that time. (Thank you Jimmy Carter).

I started getting into politics at that time and remember a speech I heard from a guy I didn't know much about. It really moved me because what he was saying was pretty much what I believed in.

It was kinda lonely liking this guy at that time, with Vietnam still on everyone's mind and all. But he spoke with "me, and ALL Americans" in mind. I understood him.

Wish I could remember that speech Ronald Reagan gave that opened my eyes.

Palin kinda reminds me of those times. Against the grain. Pissing off the county-club'ers. But hell, I don't care.

She wants this country to be great again. I'm hearing the same things I heard from her as I did from that man in the 70's.

Call me a Palin kool-aid drinker if you want....but just lettin' you know what I went through.

I'd support her in 2012. Then again there are a few others I would support as well.

If she did run, I think she would be a real problem for the RINOs, as well as exposing RINOs for who they really are in the primary debates. I'd guess there are a few who privately hope she doesn't run, just to not have to go through a debate with her as a participant.

On second thought, I kinda hope the Tea party just annihilates the Republic party before we even get to the primaries.

she endorses as “commonsense conservatives.” But in the process, Palin has had a hand in dividing the Republican Party, finding numerous Republicans too liberal.

Maybe they just aren't 'common sense' enough to wear the conservative label.

Sarah's like a lot of women we see in supermarkets everyday. They get in line with children and control their kids' impulses by acting like 'adults'. That's because they are- adults.

Maturity is something that comes with age and adulthood comes from making decisions for those less capable of making the "right" decision, like children.

This country sorely needs an adult at the helm. To say "No" when it needs to be said. I'd say Sarah and many of the women I've observed would do a much better job than the current White House occupant who has been shoveling the 'candy' (Trillions in debt) to his special friends, to be paid for later by adults (and their children, and grandchildren when they grow up).

You'll notice at times, Sarah seems embarrassed to answer a question about a particular policy of this administration as if to suggest that it's childish to even ask. Barry is looting the candy store and adults (like her) are being asked to comment on various aspects of his 'economic' policies. Or any policy for that matter.

Immaturity and adolescence are what drives this President. Cops acting stupidly, racist Tea Partiers, 1st ammendment 'rights' for radical Muslims at Ground Zero, a negative rights Constitution, etc. etc. etc. These are what you'd expect from a pimply-face teen, not the leader of the Free World.

Sarah's exuberance may turn some off, but think about it. She's a happy person and I doubt she'll ever get deadpan down, not like Hillary can, or the black, southern, drawl Hillary pulled from her former life on a plantation.(does she still have converstations with Eleanor?)

Sarah Palin has explained her position on securing the border, and against amnesty, several times in recent months, on Greta and Hannity

Juan McAmnesty/Feingold has given many positions on all sorts of media outlets over time. But he keeps coming back with attempts to grant amnesty to the hoard of third world exiled felons that reside here when congress is actually in session, and he blocks efforts to get the border sealed. Actions speak louder than words

You are clueless and dishonest

No. Unlike you personally, and Mrs. Palin and McAmnesty/Feingold, I simply require remedial action from a proven liar (McAmnesty) after they continue bad behavior over time. The fence would need to be COMPLETED and patrolled, and the seas and northern border as well, for McAmnesty/Feingold to regain any credibility at this point. Sarah can hang with his socialism or discard it - her choice.

If you missed it, or choose to ignore it, that is your problem. Everyone else here recognizes your criticism of Palin as left-wing MSM talking points.

You keep asserting that demanding that the borders be sealed in response to the crime coming into our country and the threat of Islam is a left-wing goal. You have not been paying attention. Sad, really.

I am not alone in my position on this thread, which is not surprising since this is a conservative forum rather than a populist forum.

I will note that you also did not even attempt to counter my point about the importance of securing the border.

Instead, because you have neither intellect nor honesty, you attempted to cover the weakness of your position with mindless condescension.

While it was not unexpected, since McAmnesty has left no way to defend him that will fly on this site, it is sad to see so many who have no moral principles to guide them.

Some things should never be compromised. National security when people desire to destroy your nation is one of them.
