Obama's Del. trip is chance to keep O'Donnell on radar

As President Obama steps up his campaign schedule this week, one event is something of a head-scratcher: his trip to Delaware on Friday to campaign for Democratic senatorial candidate Chris Coons.

Coons, of course, appears to be running well ahead of Republican nominee Christine O'Donnell, even in the White House's own assessment. Delaware still leans Democratic, and since the primary defeat of moderate Republican candidate Michael Castle, Democrats have been favored to win.

Wouldn't it be funny if this nonsense backfired and gave the seat to Christine O'Donnell?!

If he goes off teleprompter my bet is he makes a way out of line sexist comment that turns the election her way.

Presidents go and invest time like this for one reason: They think it’s necessary.

Obama’s and Biden’s visit can only help O’ Donnell!

Game, set, match. This is all anyone needs to know as the real internals must be far from what we are hearing.

Awful good of Democrats to help us nationalize the election.

This will help every Republican run against Obama, and hurt all Dems trying to distance themselves from him.

In political parlance, this is known as "elevating" your opponent, something Obama has also done with House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio).

Zero and his handlers are certainly well aware of that risk. Clearly, they believe O'Donnell is too big a threat to ignore. So, they're willing to risk elevating her.

Pity that national Republican figures are not as conscious of "elevating" or "demeaning" their own candidate.

Apparently Rove couldn’t do ALL of Obama’s work on this, just most of it.

I have seen her opponent on TV. Only an especially stupid jackass or a particularly dimwitted nincompoop would vote for that squirrel, who is an obvious liar and totally inept in business or economics. However, Delaware has a long history of electing just such a person.

Conventional wisdom might indicate that. But in this case Coons is the only candidate who doesn't mind being seen with Obama. So I think that they're making a big show of his appearance to make it seem like he's relevant to the whole election and the Democratic party.

That would be nice, but you assume too much.

This is an image thing. It gives him a chance to campaign where he won't lose, so he won't be seen as getting skunked.

Let's hope he's wrong.

I think it will backfire.

It shows the Democrats are very afraid of losing that seat.

If a Democrat President is campaigning in Del. the Democrats are in big trouble!

That would like a GOP President having to to defend the GOP candidate in Texas or Utah.

Yes, but the trouble isn’t in Delaware. He has trouble elsewhere.

No way. Do you honestly think that Obama is concerned about how ONE race will affect his legacy post Nov 2 TSUNAMI?

My opinion? DE/CA/WA/CT is their new firewall. These are all MUST-WIN senate seats for the Dems.

But Obama is in a tough spot. EVERY D candidate he has campaigned for has gone DOWN in the polls as a result. But it’s all he knows how to do. I think he would be visiting EVERY close race, except he’s poison to the Dem candidates. Coons just happens to not have the brains to wholesale reject Obama’s overtures of support.
