ORLANDO -- Guns may soon be out in the open around Central Florida.
Displaying a gun in public is illegal, but local groups are telling gun owners to strap their pistols on their belts Saturday and head out into public.
"Open carry is an active deterrent to crime," said Sean Caranna. He is the man leading the movement to let Floridians carry their guns openly in holsters wherever they want.
Caranna organized an Open Carry Fishing Event at the Port Orange Dunlawton Causeway Park Saturday.
It's one of many that will be held throughout the area.
"We are holding six events. They are in Daytona Beach, Melbourne, Tampa, Jacksonville, Fort Meyers and St. Augustine," Caranna said.
Florida is one of seven states that ban "open carry" of handguns. They want to change that.
According to OpenCarry.org, 14 states allow gun owners to open carry if they have a concealed weapons permit. There are 43 states that allow open carry without a permit.
Local law enforcement agencies have been notified of the events, but tickets won't be handed out because of exemptions to the law which are:
"When you're hunting, fishing, at a shooting range or when you are camping. We are going to be fishing," said Caranna.
Some people don't see a problem with changing the law, like Port Orange resident Don Johnson.
"At least I know they have it. It's better than being concealed when I don't know they have it," Johnson said.
The law may soon change if Gov. Rick Scott goes through on his campaign promise to sign the Open Carry Bill for Florida.
Last month, Senate Bill 234 was filed in the Florida House which would allow people to open carry with a permit. A vote on the issue is expected later this year.
This ideas sound cool in theory, but I would never be comfortable letting people know I am carrying. I would always be worried that some nit wit would grab it and start shooting when I am not paying attention.
Right now I keep it under my jacket until something gets dangerous, which it has once, and then pull it out. It still would be neat to wander down the street with my .50 Cal Desert Eagle stuffed in the front of my pants or in an old west holster.
No such thing as .50 cal Desert Eagle. Just .50 AE Desert Eagle. Besides, I would hate to shot something with a heavy recoil and heavy weight.
Actually the weapon is so damn heavy the recoil is not that bad. However, its weight and size make it unpractical for concealed carry and I damn sure would not want to carry it around all day.
BUT DAMN, IT IS FUN TO SHOOT!

Open carry is “bling” ... (hey, man, I gotta’ gun and you don’t). My S&W 357 tucked under my shirt is just as much a deterrent as carrying it open. It shoots just as straight.
What is at issue here is not whether concealed carry is better than open carry or vice versa but the government infringing on my right to bear arms by telling me how I may bear them. What part of “...shall not be infringed” do they not get?
That summarizes the issue so perfectly to me. Bling is the best way to describe it.
