U.S. politician wants to outlaw threatening symbols, possibly including the Sarah Palin map

A Democratic Congressman plans to bring in a bill to outlaw violent symbols targeting members of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Senate, or the judiciary.

In an inteview on CNN, Robert Brady (D-Penn) said he wants to make it a federal crime to use threatening language or symbols against federal officials.

"All we are trying to do is protect ourselves and our staff members," Brady said.

When asked when the legislation would be brought forward, he replied it would be on the "first day when we go back in session".

Brady hinted that a controversial map created by Sarah Palin's political action committee—which featured targets on 20 House districts—would be illegal if his proposal is adopted.

The CNN interviewer pointed out that Palin's map only featured symbols over top of districts, but that didn't dissuade Brady from taking a hard line. "Everyone knows who represents that district," he said.

Brady made his comments following a bipartisan conference call involving members of Congress about how to enhance safety following yesterday's shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords outside a Safeway store in Tuscon.

They can't build enough jails to house everyone who would violate this law. Stupidity on parade.

Yes, your humble opinion is probably more realistic than mine, but I think we’ll already there. Congress has special privileges and benefits that aren’t recognized by the Constitution and it continues to move in that direction. The surest and most obvious form of our freedoms being lost is the continued taxation (and fees) “creep” at all levels; Federal, State, County, City, etc. When you add up all the taxes and fees you pay, not only on income, but on real estate, utilities, phones, sales taxes, car tags, etc. you probably pay more than 50% of your income in all kinds of taxes and fees. They take, take, take and .... a revolution is still brewing, no matter what the bubble dwellers in D.C. think, on either side of the aisle. It needs to trickle down to the state and local level as well, they’re just as bad.

That is not the symbol that Sarah used. This is what she used. We cannot let them keep using this lie. Get it out there again and again. It was the DCC that used real targets to target Republicans. Sarah was using surveyor marks to indicate map locations.

Who cares what symbol she used? I don’t care if she used mushroom clouds. Its a pathetic argument and should be treated as such.

And if there is anyone here who lives in PA, please e-mail the symbol to the dipstick who is proposing this travesty.

Can these morons not understand a metaphor? such as “ targeting organized crime” Are we going to use their PC definition of speech to abrogate the 1st amendment because something can be construed by a sick, psychotic, twisted, nihilistic, Daily Kos-type liberal? Where is common sense anymore? Do we have to outlaw anything that offends the pansy left?

Outlaw “threatening language” or symbols gaainst federal officials. MSNBC would have been gone during the Bush administration. That basically describes their entire primetime lineup. Is calling someone the worst person in the world and prominently fetauring their photo threatening enough for Brady? What about that General Betrayus ad that the NYT ran? He’s a federal official. Should that be outlawed? Should the NYT editors and publishers be sent to prison for running it? When Whoppi Goldberg and others on the left had that anti-Bush rally at Madison Square Garden in NYC?

Where was Brady when Sarah Palin was hung in effigy in LA? When famous comedians on the left were calling for her to be gang raped? When Joy Behar was calling Sharron Angle a bitch and threatening her?

Where was he when these happened:

How about a law that makes it a felony to propose and vote for any law that's later determined to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court?

The punishment could be tar and feathers, followed by a swift kick in the ass.

This Brady puke only imagines that he or other Democrats would be able to speak without the use of threatening words or symbols.

Let's start with those "arrows" used in HTML ~ well, there goes Algore's Internet eh!

What the hell for??? Did anyone see those dangerous symbols and then want to do something dangerous?

Well, yes...yet another childishly stupid congressperson saw them and now wants to pass another law banning something.

Hey Mr. Thought Police...you'd better arrest me for what I'm thinking about you now, you opportunistic sonovabeach.

Wow. I actually censored my own whimsical comment because I do not have confidence that Brady and his associates have a sense of humor.

Was something about a 10-ring but I don’t recall exactly what it was.

And FWIW, I don’t buy the surveyor mark spin. IMO those were rifle sight cross hairs and there is nothing to apologize for.

Don't look through a telescopic sight much, do you?

I recognized them as standard map symbols when she first published them.

The cross hairs on the scope sight stop at the edge of the optical field (the circular ring). These cross hairs extend well beyond it.

The only people who would confuse them with a scope sight picture are those will minimal experience with guns.

You know, I've been mulling the oddity of all this over since yesterday, and I've got to say that they're very afraid, uncharacteristically so. It's not just this guy, it's to be expected from the likes of him, but also Eric Cantor and others. This crosses the aisle and ideological boundaries.

Giffords was shot by a nut, complete with completely garbled and cryptic screeds as well as online videos. He appears to have been a supporter of hers at some point, driven to murderous rage by some odd sense of betrayal that she wasn't leftist enough to suit his taste.

But, the right is to blame, no matter what. As facts come out, the goalposts get shifted, with the goal being the placing of political blame for an act that, if it could clearly be said to be political at all, was an act of vengeance by a crazed supporter.

What to make of the nonpartisan, aisle-crossing fear in the face of this lone act of violence? Fear to the point that they've cancelled all legislative activity next week, and are now proposing 1st Amendment limitations upon their return?

I'm struck that Congressional figures must be aware that they're about to legislate into existence something that they know will be extremely unpopular. That's the one possible explanation that keeps coming back to me, and they're attempting to secure and protect themselves ahead of the coming waves of outrage and backlash.

And, we've met the new scapegoat. Same as the old scapegoat in many ways, just larger, more identifiable and with a handy label to throw mud and legislative darts at. A private citizen who gets media attention that is bizarrely out of proportion to her actual role in any affair of state (which is none, actually), Sarah Palin, has been spun into the titular head of it all. Spun purely out of thin air.

A lot of hyperbole gets tossed around on political forums, but this really is a very ominous development. I don't quite know what to make of it, but there it sits, clear as day. To engage in tossing around some hyperbole myself, it honestly appears to have all the earmarks of a totalitarian purge in the making, reality be damned. And this shooting is going to be made into the spark that sets it off, no matter what the actual facts of the matter may turn out to be.
