Skip to comments.2012 siren: Barbour to South Carolina

Mississippi Gov Haley Barbour will visit the Republican-heavy Upstate of South Carolina Wednesday for two private events with local GOP officials to discuss a potential presidential run, POLITICO has learned.
Barbour will meet with Republicans first in Greenville and then in Spartanburg.
The closed-door gatherings will include party leaders and current and former elected officials, according to a South Carolina source familiar with the events.
Barbour's trip to the first-in-the-South Palmetto State illustrates his increasing seriousness about a presidential bid. His appearance in the two Upstate cities comes just a few weeks after he appeared in Columbia for the inauguration of Gov. Nikki Haley. The Mississippian hosted a reception for legislators at that time, but this foray marks one of the first times he's meeting with local activists explicitly about a presidential bid.

The Haley Barbour Ping List
Let me know if you want on or off the list.
But Steve Spurrier did such a good job this year.
Barbour will play tackle for Spurrier.
I think the world of Haley.
His chances are mighty thin, I think.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. There is NO WAY you can have an overweight, older white guy with a southern drawl debating a thin, sharply dressed President who happens to be a man of color. Its a nightmare when it comes to the 20% of the electorate who decide the election. Unfortunately, that 20 % doesn’t vote on issues, they vote on appearances, perception and emotion. In the Barbour/Obama matchup, Haley loses on all three. Sorry Governor.
Difficult to disagree with your assessment.
Thanks for your note.
Hmmm. After 4 years of this jug-eared punk an old fat white guy may not be so bad....
So Bingo on your assessment.
Haley practices conservatism sane enough, but his career has been paved by old RINO politics, entrenchment, and power. One could assume that his indebtedness to the old guard will not ever be helpful to the Tea Party. Watching him early on I thought it was transparent that he had no use for the Tea Party and would like to skip a discussion on the Tea Party. He is smooth enough to try to use his admittedly southern charm as a substitute for advancing anything the Tea Party advocates.
To you and I, Haley would be just great. :)
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:
Longtime observers both in Mississippi and in Wash DC will tell you that Haley Barbour has the sharpest political instincts of any major figure in the USA. Bill Clinton is probably his only real competitor.
Therefore, I believe it’s fair to say that Haley is better equipped than all FReepers combined when it comes to predicting his chances for success.
He won’t get into the race unless he thinks he can win; and if he thinks he can win, he WILL win.
One thing you are all missing...except for WKB...is that this gathering isn’t just about who will run for President.
It’s all about who will be influential in as far as the next candidate is concerned.
I am thrilled that Gov. Haley will be there!
“...I think Haley could certainly defeat Obama.”
I certainly would love to see that debate! Not matter what Gov. Haley looks like, he would wipe the floor with Obama, and wring him out!
As one longtime FReeper, who is in the know, will tell you...
if Haley’s losing weight, he’s running...and he will win.
