N.J. Gov. Christie meets with Mitt Romney at governor's mansion

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie hosted a frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination on Monday night, sitting down with Mitt Romney for dinner at the governor's mansion.

Nearly two dozen people, including some of Christie's top political advisers and party leaders, gathered for the meeting with the former Massachusetts governor at Drumthwacket, according to three sources.

The sources described the dinner as an informal discussion without any specific talk of endorsements in New Jersey's Republican presidential primary, which is still a year away. Romney has been laying the groundwork for a second presidential campaign, although he has not yet formally announced his candidacy.

The sources requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the meeting.

Presidential speculation has swirled around Christie himself, but he has repeatedly denied any interest in running or serving as vice president. Instead, he's become a sought-after spokesman for the Republican Party, traveling across the country to campaign for candidates last year....

Gov. Chris Christie hosted a frontrunner . . .

Please explain how in the sam hell you host a frontrunner for a guy who is so far behind in the polls that he might as well save his money and throw in the towel now.

Christie courting Romney? LOL. I’m sure it’s the other way around. Probably every wannabe nominee will meet with Christie to see if he’ll consider VEEP. I hope he says no to them all. We need him here in NJ.

And DeMint backed McCain. Politics makes strange bedfellows.

If you look to get offended by a bad alliance, a two-party system will drive you berserk.

Organize. Get politically powerful and coherent. Back those who back your positions, and have the integrity and guts to follow through. Rinse. Repeat. The Tea Party is the instrument for such. Christie is a good man with real flaws. Recognize his limitations, and put him to the best possible use. Gov. of NJ works well for him.

I can almost hear it now, "Actually, Mittwitt is a conservative."

He is weaving a new set of clothes? Trying for a reinvention?

How appropriate. RINO lovefest.

If Christie doesn’t run, every contender will want his endorsement.

I am not surprised that Romney has already sought an audience/blessing with Christie.

CC has done a good job in NJ so far. It is a beautiful state (most of it anyway).

Umm, he’s a gun-grabbing Northeastern RINO. Probably the best we can hope for in that position, but president? Huh?

I agree. Christie’s doing a great job so far, and NJ is a fine state. It suffers from having urban areas, but it has so much that I love.

Hm. This is no good. You don’t want a VP candidate from a state so close to your own - no regional balance. Hopefully Gov. Christie will look elsewhere for someone to balance his ticket.

I’ve lived in NJ all 30 years of my life. All NE Republicans have a statist streak about them. Christie is no exception. His mentor is Tom Kean, nuff said.
