American culture teaches us that we must have heroes. Years ago lots of folks decided their hero was going to be McCain because he came back from NVN alive and crippled. Some power broker decided that McCain would make a good puppet and paid for his election to the Senate and so it goes. 'Believing' means nothing in this case, IMMHO. It means he has no facts, and he feels he has to say something. He is rattled, having his top position challenged so strongly and so swiftly.

Romney's top spot in the field has never been anything more than a myth spun out of whole cloth by the MSM and the Democrats. He has consistently failed to garner anything like a commanding level of support in accurate and reliable polling of conservatives, or center-right voters.

His pathetic statement to the press is yet another failure on his part, and shows him to be the weak RINO we all know he is. He sounds almost exactly like McCain did late in the 2008 campaign, and he hasn't even officially declared.

I don't know what's propping him up, or what's propelling him forward into the fray, but he's going to get ground to hamburger if he steps foot in this race. 2012 is no place for wimpodites.

The fact that Trump (who 99% of voters don't even take seriously as a candidate) can pull ahead of Romney in polls shows just how weak Romney actually is.

Romney is just trying to get rid of Trump by difussing Trump's biggest (only really) issue.

Romney may also fear getting in a debate with Trump, and having Trump state the qualifications for natural born citizen and include "both parents must be citizens", then have Trump turn towards Romney and say "Your Dad was born in Mexico, that means you're not a natural born citizen."

That is not necessary! If Mitt Romney’s father was a citizen at the time of his birth and Mitt was born in America then Mitt is a natural born citizen. If the father had to be a natural born citizen for the son to be a natural born citizen then no natural born citizens would exist or ever have existed. When the country began there were exactly zero natural born citizens of the United States of America, that is why the requirement is for a natural born citizen OR a citizen at the time the constitution was adopted.
