Eric Cantor downplays Donald Trump's birther-centric proto-candidacy
The Los Angeles Times ^ | April 13, 2011 | Michael Muskal

In a sign that Donald Trump’s self-promotion tour and possible run for president continues to make the Republican establishment nervous, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on Wednesday minimized the wealthy developer’s run because he was focusing on President Obama’s birthplace.

“I don't think he is really serious when we … see a campaign launched on the birther issue,” said Cantor (R- Va.) speaking on CNN’s “American Morning.”

Trump has become almost a fixture on cable television shows in recent weeks as he has resurrected the issue of where the president was born. The Obama campaign long ago released documents showing Obama was born in Hawaii, but Trump has increasingly challenged that and has even said he has sent investigators to seek out details.

Trump’s comments and the publicity he has drawn has played to some of the more conservative parts of the GOP electorate and his popularity has soared in recent polls of Republican voters. Trump was running second in a Wall Street Journal/NBC poll and in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll released Tuesday, Trump tied with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for first among those answering whom they would support for the GOP nomination.

Trump’s rise is being viewed as a signal of the weakness of the GOP field, with about half a dozen candidates swapping the top position depending on who is doing the poll and another dozen candidates forming a second tier....

Have we no conservatives in the Republican Party anymore? Governors Romney, Pawlenty, Huckabee and now Rep. Cantor blow-off the people who want to know if Mr. Obama is truly eligible. Then Gov. Huckabee comes out for in-state tuition for illegals. Except for Gov. Palin, are there any serious candidates? No wonder Mr. Trump looks good to so many people.

These RINOS are taking our votes for granted....they figure we will never vote for Obama, so no matter what, they have our vote.

I expect all Republican politicians to take the NBC clause of the Constitution seriously and to refrain from dismissing the birth certificate controversy.
I expect all Republican politicians to recognize that Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann energize the Republican base better than anyone else in the country.

Any Republican politician who cannot do these things is dead to me. No, they don't have to support either Trump, Palin, or Bachman for the presidency. That's optional. But attacking these three people for doing what every Republican politician should be doing, is a quick way to convince me that you're not worthy of my respect.

All except Trump enable the gay Muzzie usLurper!

michael savage routinely emphasizes the following points: (1) both parties are basically the same — same old same old and (2) both parties agree to have 8 years democrat, 8 years republican (more or less). if you look at the people the republican party is promoting as being their “guy” it almost seems that perhaps they actually don’t want to win the general election. seems crazy, but that’s my impression in any case. then when you hear these clowns all basically supporting obama on the BC issue, in effect defending him AGAINST the millions who constitute the base, that may be the only reasonable conclusion, unless someone has a better reasoning...

whatever the case, i think trump is a threat not only to the democrats but also to the republican leadership.

You know as well as I, these so called Republicans are scared to death of the Media and public opinion. Both Parties really don't care about the Constitution, except to use it as a talking point when it fits their agenda.

I don't care what the Republican Establishment says, or the Constitutional attorney who broadcasts in the evening. The more days go by the more obvious it's becoming a Third Party (Tea Party) candidate may be our only hope of reclaiming our once great Country. We sure don't have much representation in the Republican Party.

You're accurate in your description of Trump. He might be a huge FAUX Conservative, but at least he's not afraid of Political Correctness, as defined by the Obama media. That is what is driving his popularity.

Governor Sarah Palin “enables” Mr. Obama? Is that why his minions attack her 24/7 or are they doing that for fun? Are you kidding?

That is why to date among the canidates the Donald has my vote.

He talks and I understand what he is saying, most people don't in the DC circles.

He doesn't say Obama wasn't born in the US but why all the trouble in answering it.

Asking a question doesn't make him a racist or nut.

People wonder and the press should wonder why the missing years in his life.

I don’t think Cantor is serious about his oath of office, given that he failed to object when Congress was counting the votes for a(n apparent) natural-born British subject to be President. F him.

The GOP better take another look at WHY Trump is rising in the polls. They seem to be working with the democrats trying to protect obama. If they continue to cower and some loser retread gets the nomination I will sit this one out because it won’t matter any more. They have a chance to get on board with Trump and smoke the loser right out of the White House. Instead they side with the democrats.

******

I have no respect for the LATIMES if they are the newspaper that I came to loathe during the 2008 presidential campaign.

Why did I come to loathe that newspaper? I did so for this reason: LATIMES, if I have the right newspaper, would not release a videotape of presidential candidate Obama severely criticizing Jews before a crowd in LA of Arabs and Muslims.

As far as I know, LATIMES still has that video, and it still won't release it.

So until the LATIMES releases that videotape that is damaging to Obama, I have only loathing for them, because they forfeited their right to be called journalists when they refused to release the Obama videotape.

I hope that the American public will put tremendous pressue on LATIMES to release the Obama videotape during the upcoming 2012 presidential campaign.

Unfortunately...How long before Trump gets a family threat, to drop the birther issue, by some evil element of the New World Order elite at the UN, CFR, IMF and/or the Bilderbergers? And the SCOTUS will not allow the chaos that would ensue from an Obama removal...period, IMHO.
