State Senate President David Williams has won Kentuckys Republican gubernatorial primary. Williams faces Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear in this falls off-year election. Williams beat out businessman Phil Moffett and Jefferson County Auditor Barbara Holsclaw.
Turnout was incredibly low, less than ten percent, and Williams 15,000 vote win over Moffett was narrower than expected, especially considering he outspent both opponents by about ten to one. Polls taken before the primary showed the senate president with a much larger lead.
With a top-flight, conservative candidate like David Williams on the ticket, the governors mansion in Kentucky is a top pick-up opportunity for Republicans, said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus in a statement.
Williams, 57, has led the state Senate since 2000, when Republicans took control. Hes been in the same seat since 1987. In 1992, he ran for Senate against Democratic incumbent Wendell Ford but lost in a landslide. He considered running against former Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) in the 2010 primary but chose to stay in the state legislature. Bunning ultimately retired.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), has said Williams will go down as the most important Republican state lawmaker in history and ranks as one of the most skillful legislators Ive ever seen. Some lawmakers have been turned off by Williams combativeness; hes known as Bully from Burkesville for his aggressive legislative style.

When will the Pinheads show up to tell us how this guy is not conservative at all?
I hope that Republicans do well in Kentucky. Their electoral record there is very mixed.
Sounds like Bill Johnson won the Secretary of State race.
Good news. He’s a good man. Honest. Honorable. Capable. Just the kind of guy you need in charge of the election process.
That's exactly what this Country needs more of, conservatives who don't mind kicking the crap out of liberals.
I was not terribly impressed with the candidates that ran in KY. I don’t think Williams can beat Beshear. It’s not impossible, but not very likely (Williams just seems too tied to the legislature and every vote he’s ever taken will be scrutinized and attacked to the last — while the media has just ignored Beshear altogether, unlike the constant vicious attacks that Ernie Fletcher withstood for doing nothing more than undoing 4 decades of Democrat hackery).
Hopefully we can retain or win some of the other downballot offices. I didn’t notice that Trey Grayson had resigned back in January as Sec of State, I hoped he might’ve tried for the office, but after the trashing he took from the Paulbots, it’s no wonder he exited politics.
Yeah, looks like your guy finally won a nomination for something. ;-) If he wins and Williams loses, that will put him in a prime position to run for Governor in 2015 (or for Mitch McConnell’s seat if he retires in 2014, which I hope he does).
:-)
Didn’t know Grayson quit. So we have an appointed rat (he lost her own primary for the full term) presiding over this election. Not positive.
I liked Bill Johnson. I favored him as the choice for Senate last time. I hope he wins.
So the only Republican currently in a statewide constitutional office is the aptly named Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer who only won cause he was a basketball star at Kentucky. He’s now the LT Gov nominee. I think I heard a while back that he’s a RINO.
A democrat named Farmer is running for Ag post this time. (lame) The GOPer is a State Rep.
Auditor is an open seat. Rat incumbents running for AG and Treasurer.
For Agriculture secretary, the RATs are running “Jeff Johnson: the name you know.”
We should find a conservative named Robert Byrd to run against Manchin in WV. : )
I’d like nothing more than to pull off such a trick. Maybe I should change my name to Impy Obama-Martinez and run against Gutierrez in the rat primary. ;-D
