Rick Perry has “huge” opening as many in GOP establishment remain uncommitted

As he weighs whether to jump into the 2012 Republican presidential race, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been dialing GOP establishment bigwigs across the country. In phone calls that sometimes stretch more than a half hour, Perry asks the same questions:

Is the door open for a new candidate? And how wide is it open?

Perry is finding that a vast reservoir of the Republican Party establishment — broadly defined to include elected officials, donors, strategists and activists whose support fuels presidential campaigns — is so far untapped, according to interviews conducted Monday and Tuesday with 19 major donors, strategists and party officials in13 states.

Establishment figures are waiting to see a candidate build and finance a national campaign, hone a strong economic message and, most of all, prove that he or she can go the distance to defeat President Obama. The biggest force driving these kingmakers is that they are hungry for a winner, and although former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is widely considered the early frontrunner, broad swaths of the party remain unconvinced that he’s the one.

SNIP

The absence of an overwhelming frontrunner is bolstering the candidacy of Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), a tea-party heroine who many key party figures believe cannot beat Obama.

SNIP

Republicans interviewed also said they were open to backing New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), although both have adamantly denied they will run. But only one of the 19 establishment figures interviewed mentioned former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, even though she said in a Newsweek story this week that she is still considering a 2012 candidacy.

You are correct about Chester Arthur - from what I read about him, he wasn’t above board about his eligibility either.

I don’t care what Barry Soetoro got away with - he was not then and is not now eligible to be the POTUS. The complicity in this devastation brought on our country is shocking: the Congress, the Supreme Court, all of the States and the Electoral College should all be impeached or prosecuted for high crimes against We the People. I believe in the US Constitution and the Rule of Law. I will not bend just because it is someone whom I like. Rubio talks a good talk, but so did Barry the Liar. The rules are there for a good reason. If we are willing to break them as Conservatives, then all bets are off for the survival of this Nation.

Perry is a RINO, that comes from us Texans.

Idiots who are okay with open borders and Eminent domain abuse try to push Perry and it isn’t flying here in his home state.

If you personally have the integrity to check my posting history, you will find that I am hardly a Palinbot (and have bashed her continuously for her links to McCain whose nomination forced me to vote Alan Keyes in 2008), I loath Ron Paul and his hippies, and for now I think the most acceptable declared candidate is Cain.

I don’t want socialism and I will not vote for a socialist, whenther that socialist be Hillary Clinton, Barry Sotoero, Mitt Romney, Or Rick Perry. I am not opposing a person or a party - I am opposing an Ideology.

If people are not mad at the loss of freedoms enough to vote for an across the board conservative in 2012, maybe they will be in 2016.

Preserving these ideals is far more important than preserving wealth or even the union.

This has become a topic discussed heavily in churches. The obligations Christians have to be in the world, not cloistered monks is beggining to dawn.

I kindly disagree. And besides Bush is not a bad comparison. Bush got a bad rap and was alinskyized by the media. His book and interviews and my screen name will have him go down in history as a great POTUS. INCLUDING THE WATER BOARDING THAT HELPED GET BIN LADEN. I think Perry would be better at defending himself to the media. Bush was a great leader but he didn’t care about the media at all.

“Bush was a great leader”

Well, we’re certainly on different pages and will therefore not be able to agree about Perry but no hard feelings.

If Perry is the candidate, I am actually hoping for Daniels as VP.”

I like that. A lot. Not sure if Daniels would go for it, but that is great.

I ran as far away from Daniels as possible in terms of running for President, but I have a very different view in this role. I am guessing he’d be interested, as VP is a lot less taxing on the family. It is really 2 months of intensive campaigning and a whole lot less limelight on wife and kids (Palin being the glaring exception to that statement). Sure, they’ll pull out some of the dirt on his marriage irregularities, but there’s not much there there. The marriage was broken, and they repaired it with many happy years since.

I think the swing voters, especially mid-western swing states would be very attracked to a Perry/Daniels ticket.

I think what you're getting at is you don't want a NWO, world government, Globalist being elected (who can be Socialists, Marxist, even Republicans) The Bible says this will come to past and IMO, there's not a lot we can do to change that. (only delay it)

I'm a Texan and Gov. Perry has given some impressions of being a Globalist but, it has a lot to do with Texas’ position in the world as a major energy and agricultural economy.

I spent hours researching the NAU, TTC, and other connections to foreign governments Perry/Texas have been involved in. We raised HELL and Perry changed his tune. Rare in a politician these days.

Bottom line is getting the self-professed Communist out of the White house. (after that we can work on the Biblical aspects)

I believe Perry has the best chance to beat Obama and I think he will abide by the will of the people.

It should be but, given our last choice for president, I don’t think it’s up to ‘us’. (a least not presently)

IMO, Perry has the best chance to get the Commie out of the WH. If the *establishment* deems him the nominee, I’m fully behind him.(a third party, at this point, would most likely put Barry back in charge) Everything else can wait till later.

I like Rubio a lot, BUT....

He went wobbly on the AZ illegal alien law and appears he supports amnesty for these 30-40 million scum alien invaders/DNC socialists who declard war on America.

It is not just the foreign government connection on TTC.
It was also the part of TTC that included seizing plots of land at intersections using eminent domain to sell to commercial developers.
enough to cover all of the inevitable gas stations at many intersections, and enough for an industrial park at one interstate intersection likely to attract trucking businesses.

That was Kelo vs. New London on steroids.

If you are capable of twisting your mind to be okay with that, you deserve communism. I am opposing Perry. People in my church look at this and the conclusion they get is diametrically opposed to yours.

If Perry gets in, it will be over the opposition of people who vote for honest men like Herman Cain instead of your little socialist Ken Doll.

When you try to gloss over parts of Perry's record you do yourself no favors.

You do realize the TTC never came to fruition, right?

Might you also realize that we still need some sort of transportation plan. Seems like since the TTC was shot down, (and it was shot down) very little has been in the works.

Damned strait I realize it.

I was one of the Texans working to top Perry from getting this through then and we who stopped him then will also successfully keep him out of the white house now.

Even if Rockafeller Republicans make him the Republican nominee.
