Lurking behind the anticipation over Texas Gov. Rick Perrys entrance into the Republican primary is a critical question: Can he take social conservatives away from their current favorite, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.)?
Perry, to the surprise of many GOP operatives, seems to be aiming to be the darling of the social conservatives rather than to emphasize his impressive fiscal record. In other words, hes aiming for Bachmanns base. But it remains to be seen if that is wise.
I met with a prominent social conservative leader with a vast grass-roots network. The leader acknowledged that there is a real danger from social conservatives perspective that Bachmann and Perry will carve up the vote and allow Mitt Romney to slide through. Could they get behind one or the other to prevent such a split? The leader laughed, Were not very good at that. If we try, we winding up making everyone mad.
The issues on which Bachmann is skewered in the mainstream media (gay marriage, most clearly) are the very things that endear her to the base. And while she has eschewed playing the media victim, as Sarah Palin often has, it certainly is true that being attacked by liberal pundits and groups does nothing but raise her stock among grass, roots social conservatives.
There is an issue, however, that may be decisive, that on its face has nothing to do with social issues. It is no secret that many social conservatives are part of or share the same principles as the Tea Party, most especially the notion that professional politicians are out of control, feel entitled and dont live under the same economic constraints as the rest of us....

Comparing Perry to Obama? What a joke.
Sara Palin does not have to "play" the media victim, she 'is' the media victim! Idiot!

This Texan would prefer NOT to have to hold her nose and vote for Rick Perry.
If this is all they can find on Perry, he is sounding pretty good. This is praising with faint damns.
The governor's mansion was damaged by fire. He can't live there and he can't work there. We're probably saving money by renting a house in which he can live, work, and entertain - securely.
$10k a month for rent, utilities, and upkeep on a rental home is a bargain when compared to what we'd be paying if we had to pay for him to live in a hotel, rent office space for him to work, and rent private entertainment venues for his official state dinners and parties - and pay for extra security at all of those places.
Who are you to judge the condition of Rick Perry’s soul? If you have specific evidence, as we do with Obama, that Perry is lying about his faith in Jesus Christ, then please present it. Otherwise, your claim is disgusting and baseless. From the statements on your home page, you appear to be a Palin supporter. Sarah Palin seems very confident in Perry’s profession of faith. She would know more than you whether or not Perry is a believer.
Gov. Palin is no *victim*. She has been attacked relentlessly for almost 3 years now, and she remains unbowed, and as someone said, “Undefeated”. Just b/c she doesn’t stand silently like a punching bag a la Bush, doesn’t mean that she considers herslf to be a victim. That is the absurd mantra toward those who strike back against them twice as hard. Pretty soon THEY will all be feeling like victims of Sarah’ razor sharp attacks on them.
How about speaker Pelosi and her extravagance? They actually ordered more planes for leadership during her tenure.
Then Gov. Huckabee of Arkansas and his family lived in a triple-wide manufactured home donated to that state by a manufacturer while the governor’s mansion was renovated.

“Then Gov. Huckabee of Arkansas and his family lived in a triple-wide manufactured home donated to that state by a manufacturer while the governor’s mansion was renovated.’
That was his choice — I don’t think governors should live in donated mobile homes.
I am more interested in not spending money on BIG ticket items in the budget and effective leadership.
How many jobs did Huckabee create?
Perry’s Texas created as many jobs as all the other states put together.
Publicity stunt.
And? This is Texas not Arkansas. We wouldn’t dream of asking Governor Perry to court business executives from California by entertaining them in a damn triple-wide trailer. He’d rightly be considered a joke and Texas wouldn’t get the private sector jobs that have been pouring into the state.
To suggest that Perry run the business of the Great State of Texas from a donated, triple-wide trailer is ludicrous. Huck was a fool to make that comparison.
Take a look at how we do business in Texas - Cowboys’ Stadium and The Ballpark in Arlington are two such examples. We’re playing with the big boys for major money and influence. We don’t have time for silliness.

In the last Texas governor’s race, the “white” Republican candidate, Rick Perry (BTW, isn’t Perry a common
Melungeon name?) was darker complected than the “minority” Democrat candidate, Tony Sanchez,
who was very obviously of the Caucasian race, with fair skin, blue eyes, and, at a younger age, light brown hair.

I’ve lived in Texas twice: stationed at Fort Hood from 1979-81 and lived & worked in Fort Worth after Katrina destroyed my business in Biloxi. We are working on getting Mrs. 2ndDivisionVet transferred back to D/FW. I like Texas a lot. The real estate deals and the variety of stores, alone, makes D/FW better than most places. I just think it’ll look bad to some people in these hard times.
In Arkansas a triple-wide trailer is an upgrade. The Governor’s mansion is a ‘78 Winnebago on blocks.
This would replace the whole complex!! LOL
And we’ll be glad to have you if you make it back to Texas.
As long as Perry properly explains the situation (with way less arrogance than I did) and outlines the costs of other options, they’ll see that we chose a reasonable option to enable him to run the state’s business.
We have to compete with California and New York and we do so at far less expense to our taxpayers.
