The Republican Party has apparently found itself a new messiah in Rick Perry.
The conservative Christian governor of Texas has come out of nowhere and has already lapped the Republican field for President.
In the two short weeks since he's entered the race, Perry has shot to the top of the polls and leads his nearest competitor by double digits.
The latest CNN/ORC International Poll shows 27% of Republicans supporting him, followed by Mitt Romney at 14%, Sarah Palin – who's not a candidate – at 10%, and Michele Bachmann and Rudy Giuliani – also not a candidate – at 9%. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul come in at 6%.
Perry's supporters tend to be older, white and rich, and his strongest backing comes from tea party supporters. He holds a whopping 23-point lead over Michele Bachmann among tea party members in one CNN poll.
It's an astonishing impact in so short a time, especially when Perry has managed to jump to the top of the pack without laying out a single plan or idea for solving America's problems.....

I wonder about some purely hypothetical questions...
Would he sign a deal to increase the debt ceiling another $2 trillion in exchange for $2 trillion in reductions to planned increases in spending over the next 10 years ? Sure.
Would he be ok with a “quantitative easing” program by the Federal Reserve ? Sure.
Would he go for an increase in Federal aid to the States to be used for “education” ? Sure.
Would he be sign a law requiring all American schoolchildren to be required to get a new vaccine to “protect” them from STDs ? Sure.
Would he sign a compromise bill that required more stringent Federal gun ownership laws in exchange for tougher penalties for illegal aliens ? Maybe.
Not that any of these questions will come up in the way I describe them.
IMHO, his record doesn’t show that he’s uncompromising. IMHO, compromise with the left and with the islamic invasion is leading us towards real ugly consequences, which makes me more comfortable with someone the Republican machine is not comfortable with but who is also pro-small business, pro-Christian, pro-Israel, pro-life, etc. Perry seems to be too politically smooth; makes me think he’s going to compromise us farther down the hole we’re in.
That is my biggest concern. I will keep my eye on the general election matchups and see how Perry polls among independents and moderates. If he polls well there, then I think he can win. Really though, I think this election will be all about the economy. Whoever has a good track record on that issue stands a good chance against Obama.
I think Perry has jumped to the talk due to the fact he's talking about the economy and he has the presence of a leader
I'm ambivalent towards him at the moment and think I would have an easier time voting for him than I did for McLame.
I also think he scores well with the ladies for obvious reasons. Call it the Clinton factor.
This column can be summarized as: Perry is a stupid, Bush-like cowboy. Someone—anyone—please help me understand why so many people like him.

Yep, still had it in my head that NY was number 2, but that’s been a while ago now.

Gov. Perry is an interesting candidate, neither more nor less. It’s a long, long time before I’ll get to vote for or against anyone.
I reckon the GOP sees Perry as one who might satisfy (and get $ from) the Tea Party yet still obey the GOP party bigshots.
And when he breaks those promises, you'll be so "disappointed"--just like those who fell for Obama's words of hype and change. Perry's actions as governor reveal a tendency to ignore the will of the people in favor of his corporate backers and cronies.
Just as I have done with Clinton, Hillary and Obama, I refuse to listen to Perry's speeches and promises. I look at his record; that's all I need.

How childish to use the pejorative ‘darling’ and how typical.

Because he’s conservative enough for the base (according to recent polls) and he’s got the experience that the other candidates are sorely lacking.
He does have some glaring mistakes in his record that give me pause, but until someone who is just as or more conservative than Perry WITH more experience comes along, he’s likely going to be the nominee.
What’s going to piss off myself and many conservatives as well is that he is going to pick a northern moderate Republican for Vice President. He will do so for electoral reasons. With the right VP the ticket should win some blue or leaning blue states especially if that VP is a certain former Minnesota or Massachusetts governor.
Of the two I’d prefer Pawlenty. He’s got “VP material” written all over him.
Perry has jumped to the top of the GOP polls for the same reason he has jumped to the top of the liberal media wrath, he can win.

If the media (which conjures up all these polls) likes him, that makes him suspect in my eyes....
Who do you recommend?
I don't like any of them very much, except Ron Paul, who, as everyone keeps reminding us, has no chance. Meanwhile he consistently polls in the top three.
That said, I'd vote for any of the current candidates, just to keep Obama from being reelected.
