Matt Doheny Kicks Off Rematch Against Bill Owens in New York
Roll Call ^ | September 22, 2011 | Joshua Miller

Republican businessman Matt Doheny, who lost to Rep. Bill Owens (D-N.Y.) by fewer than 2,000 votes in 2010, filed his paperwork Wednesday to launch another bid in the 23rd district.

In an interview, Doheny said the twin challenges that the country faces today are the lack of growth and the nation’s debt. He was bullish on winning this time around given that a third-party candidate running on the Conservative Party line received more than 6 percent of the vote last cycle.

“We like the opportunity set up here, and we’re working to make sure I’m the Republican, Conservative and Independent parties’ nominee for this district,” he said.

I’m very lukewarm about Matt Doheny, who is not particularly conservative. At the same time, his money appears to be spooking other candidates out of the race. Also, I think that this district is not as safely Republican as it used to be and that redistricting will increase the DemocRAT base there.

I have no idea what the districts in that part of the state will look like next year, and it would be premature to donate to Doheny even if he wasn’t pro-abortion. For all we know the North Country will be added to the Albany NY-21 and the other parts of the NY-23 will be given to the NY-24 and NY-25, leaving Donehy essentially without a district in which to run.

But if the NY-23 stays about the same, I’d rather nominate Paul Maroun.

Redistricting is going to wreak havoc across the state. I live between Slaughter, Hochul and Higgins the only Republican around anymore is Tom Reed and he’s new.

My expectation is that the redistricting will eliminate the districts of Bob Turner in New York City and Maurice Hinchley in upstate New York.
