Perry's Problem: Voters Think He's a Major A-Hole
red state ^ | 10-28-11 | brookhaven

Posted on 10/26/2011 7:27:45 PM PDT by Brookhaven

The Washington Post ran a story today about a group of Ohio voters here.  While the story centered around Herman Cain, there was a section buried deep in the story that offered an amazing insight into Rick Perry's current problems.

At one point, Hart asked the participants to think back to fifth grade and the types of students they had encountered. From a list that included descriptions such as “teacher’s pet,” “loner,” “hard worker,” “nerd” and “know it all,” Hart asked them to write down which most applied to Cain, to Romney, to Perry and to Obama.

The majority described Cain as the classmate who was the “hard worker,” with others saying he was the “all-American kid” or “the kid everyone respects.”

In contrast, Perry left this group cold. If he is the person many GOP strategists believed was destined to challenge Romney for the nomination, no one had given that memo to these Ohioans.

In the fifth-grade exercise, eight of the 12 wrote down “bully” as the kind of kid he reminded them of. When the discussion turned to other attributes, he was described as the kind of neighbor others would not want to mess with, or someone who would build a fence around his property, or someone who would be in everybody else’s business.

“He wouldn’t be on the casserole committee,” said Sydney Mathis, a Democrat.

“Annoying,” said Lisa Cedrone, an independent voter who supported Obama in 2008 and is undecided today.

None of the descriptions are positive in any way. If you had to describe them in one word, it would be: a**hole. And not just you regular, every day, run-of-the-mill a**hole, but major a**hole.

I've believed Perry's problems were all about how he tripped up early—a couple of verbal gaffes and some poor debate performances. I also thought he could get back in the race by refining his message and showing up well in the debates. Now, I'm not so sure.

Erick Erickson has said many times on his radio show that the most likeable candidate always wins. I'm not sure if I buy that, but I am sure the reverse is true: the most disliked candidate never wins. Given the above statements by Ohio voters, Rick Perry's problems have nothing to do with his policy positions or debate performances, and everything to do with how voters perceive him personally.

PS

Yes, I know I could have used another word here, but no other seemed to get the job done. Language is a toolbox. Sometimes you need to use a paint brush to apply just the right shade of meaning, and sometimes you need a big hammer to make your point.

Interesting. I personally just think he is a big fat liberal. But if others see him the way the article says I am ok with it. Anything to rid America of this trash.

Not Fox New’s fault. They are the two spoiled brats who fought. I find it hilarious. No hole too big as far as I am concerned. I hope they play it 100 times a day.

I think Perry attempted to compensate for his poor debating skills by acting overly assertive and tough. I don’t think he is a jerk at all, but he has come off that way. It just hasn’t played well. Never let anyone say debates don’t matter. Perry is a perfect example of someone who’s fortunes collapsed with bad debate performances, and Cain has had just the opposite experience with his “happy warrior” debate style.

Perry, just like me, has no idea what the hell a casserole committee is. As expected a bunch of Obama voters don't like Perry, that's not a bad thing. Personally I like the guy and agree with 90% of his views. I feel the same way about Cain. I don't think Herman gets on the committee either.

I don’t like Perry for a couple of reasons - big reasons - first, I don’t like it that he was Al Gore’s point man for Texas - and I also don’t like him hiding behind that pastor to disrespect The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - and I don’t like him hiding behind his wife for the same reason. Plus he creeps me out.

LMAO!!!

No, we're just misinformed! It's the 2%ers who are really informed. If only the overwhelming majority of heartless Republicans and Independents who disagree with his liberal views on ILLEGAL could just see the light. If only.

His reaction to his preacher’s Mormon smear certainly moved me towards that position. A president should be better then that. From the strength of the drop-off afterward I don’t think I was alone in that reaction.

When it comes to giving taxpayer funded subsidies to ILLEGAL aliens he is just as liberal as California's Governor Moonbeam. That doesn't exactly look good on a 'Conservative' résumé. But it's La Raza Rick's history and he can't change it.

The debates don't really matter. It's the sound bites that come out of them that matter. That's why the media loves these so-called debates; they get fodder to use against candidates they want to take out.

He really needs to do interviews that are relaxed and genuine. See the Piers Morgan interviews that made both Christy and Cain seem likeable. I thought his interview with Bill O last night was very good and Perry was more likeable when he smiled. He needs to do these interviews every night.

I think it is a mistake for us to be attacking our Republican Candidates.

Whether it's Cain or Perry or even Newt, we need someone who will beat both Romney and Obama. We need to quit attacking every candidates but our own. It does no one any good. When people call me every name they know because I lean towards Perry, it does nothing to help Cain.

They both have faults. Perry couldn't out-debate the Rainman and every time Herman makes a mistake, the next day he says he was joking. I think Herman is a hell of a good man and should say, "let me clearify that". When people respect you it works. Perry is a Texan that understands gun rights better than anyone running. He also knows his stuff on energy.

You know who a lot of Ohioans think is a bigger azzhole at the moment?

Gov John Kasic.
Ohioans are so tied to their Union gravy trains it is stunning.
I left in 1979 as I could see the writing on the wall.
I live in a “right to work state” now
Something that scares the pee out of union leaders.

It is my opinion that we are seeing some transference from whiny union types in Ohio that HATE what Kasic is doing and that they see Perry as running a state that Kasic is trying to emulate.
