I watched 30 mins. My observations:
Newt has a beautiful voice. It is a pleasure and easy to listen him.
Cain has cranky voice with pauses in speech.
I know this is superficial, but at least since nixon/kennedy debates, these sort of things matter.
Also, cain ducked at least one question. I’m not sure he is ready yet.
Newt had powerful and simple arguments. If Newt were to reject his global warming and “limited amnesty” bs, I would join Newt bandwagon. Now I’m not sure I trust him.

As the host Steve King pointed out this morning on Fox, Cain did not “duck” King moved on to the next question without giving Cain a chance to respond.
The question Cain ducked was something about medicare.
He started to answer it, then backed off and said “you first newt” or something to that effect. Newt went on and gave strong answer without hesitation.
That was odd, it looked like Cain did not know how to answer.

The good thing about Newt is that he does know the ropes. The bad thing about Newt is that he does know the ropes.
I quit watching the stupid gotcha’-fest ‘debates’ years ago. Decided that this one sounded different enough to be watchable...and, I was right. It was an interesting ninety something minutes.
You know, I didn't quite understand what the question was until Newt started answering it and chalked up Cain's deferring to Newt as him being in the same boat I was in. Another thing that might have been either my hearing or my internet connection...but the latter part of the question was kinda' garbled. Anyway, it's possible that Cain didn't quite hear all of it, like me?
I would guess that Newt's total knowledge of all these subjects is why none of the other candidates had the guts to even show up for this!
I'll go with gutsy Cain....the only one, it seems, who's not afraid to go up against Newt.
After watching and listening to two great Americans, I retired for the night with an optimistic, hopeful belief in the future of our Nation.
Promised myself that I would not check threads posted by FReepers who have lost their sanity during this primary season.
It’s working! I believe Newt and Herman would make an unbeatable ticket - but they are the best judges of their compatibility.
Newt impresses me - not only with his grasp of Constitutional principles, but also with his survival skills - having been decimated by the media and his GOP colleagues.
Herman Cain impresses me because he had the courage to enter the race as a novice politician - guided only by his conscience and a desire to reverse the socialist dependency that is destroying his America.
Good luck to both of them and may America win!!!
It may have appeared that Herman was not ready— but there is a huge flaw with that thought....
Herman knows exactly what defined contributions are....he is a career CEO....he knows EXACTLY what defined contributions are...I think several viewers may not be familiar with the term, and so they assumed when Herman passed to Newt that he didn’t know...that is called projection...
anyway— Herman passed to Newt first, because it was Newt’s turn to go first....Herman caught himself....hence Newts saying “It’s(that’s?) only fair.”
But anyone who knows what defined contributions are would realize that Herman would have been a failed CEO if he did not know what it means....if you listen to his answer— he explains it to the audience— once it was his turn...
I understand it may have looked like Herman was not ready...but he was thinking about how best to answer...it is not a term most folks are familiar with....
That being said— every candidate has strengths and weaknesses- the smart ones know their weaknesses and hire folks to cover those— it is one key to success in business....they saying is “Soar with your strengths, hire your weaknesses.” A rule for managers and leaders to live by...
Lochangego what isconservative happening in societyyved it! It wasn’t really a debate, more like an airing of what conservative principles look like. Which is whatthe Cain talked about during the debate when he said that CEO’s need to get out there and educate people in order to change what is happening in society.
The Cain pause c’mere when asked about defined benefit. Plans and I also thought the question wasn’t clear. They both did great. LOVED the end when they got to ask each other questions. . . Cain to Newt: “If you were elected VICE PRESIDENT.....” lol
The question, IIRC, had to do with defined benefits. I saw the exchange, and I think it was more tactical than ducking. It’s an advantage to have the other guy go first on a difficult issue because you can react to what the other guy puts out there, and people generally remember what was said last better. This may have been Cain’s rationale for deferring to Newt, because I seem to recall he did follow up with a fairly detailed discussion of defined benefits versus defined contribution, so he didn’t defer for lack of knowing the subject matter. He may also have been uncertain of the context of the question, as the moderator was posing questions that were tremendously open-ended, sort of like a poorly written essay question, “tell me everything you know about WWII.” Um, where to begin... But I’m not sure. I suppose I’d have to watch it again to nail it down. But that was my impression as I saw it live.
I think it was the debate format that made Herman defer to Newt. I saw it and it did kind of look weird but I am pretty sure it was Newt’s turn to answer first.
The question was kind of BS way to ask. I don’t recall it exactly but it was worded weirdly, almost from a continuing sentence earlier, something like: “..so... Defined benefits or current contribution?”

Yes, but doing that against the teleprompter would crush him instantly. He must be ready at least to give a strong argument (even on some related issue) without hesitation or asking obama to go first.
You are so right!!! Herman should have said “Oh, I’m sorry. It is your turn to go first.” Since he didn’t, his is not ready.....
