Richard Lugar: Tea Party Cost GOP Senate Control In 2010
Outside The Beltway ^ | December 29, 2011 | Doug Mataconis

Richard Lugar has been in Washington since 1977 and has been among the most visible Senate Republicans for decades now. On foreign policy, he’s perhaps one of the most knowledgable members of the Senate at this point and, if he manages to get re-elected and Republicans gain control of the Senate, he would become the President Pro Tempore and third in line to the Presidency. That “manages to be re-elected” part is the problem for him, though. It’s not likely that he’d lose to a Democrat in a General Election, but right now he’s facing a Tea Party backed challenge in the primary that will be held on May 8th and there’s little love lost between Indiana’s Senior Senator and the insurgent Republican movement. This past Sunday, for example, Lugar said that he believed that it was the Tea Party that cost Republicans control of the Senate in the 2010 elections:

Sen. Dick Lugar (Ind.), facing a primary contest from the right in his reelection bid, said past Tea Party-backed challenges had “killed off” Republican efforts to take the Senate in the past and could undermine a GOP majority again in 2012.

“A Republican majority in the Senate is very important, and Republicans who are running for reelection ought to be supported by people who want to see that majority,” Lugar said in an interview that aired Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“I think the majority of Tea Party people understand that too,” he added.

(…)

Republicans lost the seats before in Nevada_and_New Jersey and Colorado where there were people who were claiming they wanted somebody who was more of their Tea Party aspect, but they killed off the Republican majority.”

“This is one of the reasons why we have a minority in the Senate right now,” he claimed....

Sorry Dick. We want that majority to be made up of people on OUR side.

What good is Senate control by Republicans who vote like Democrats?

Lugar is another poster boy for the RINO establishment.

And what the heck would he have done as chairman of some stupid committee if the GOP won the Senate?

He’d “work across the isle” to water down any conservative legislation to give the Dems most of what they wanted. He’d want to go back to “power sharing” (remember that Trent Lott disaster? what a flaming you know what).

This seems to be the typical, tired meme for the inside the beltway dopes. Lugar has to look no further than in the mirror to see why the GOP didn't take the Senate. If it were no for the Tea Party energizing the base, these clowns would still be the laughing stock embarrassment they were in '08. I am surprised that Lugar can make statements like this. I would have thought that his face would have totally drooped off this Olde Pharts head by now.

Lugar used to be a pretty good conservative many moons ago. But he has lost it, completely. He’s turned into a clone of Olympia Snowe.

Awwwwwwwwwwwww - - - - . This is soooooooooooooo sad! Sniffle, sniffle, honk!

ANOTHER RINO is fearful of loosing his $174,000/year “job.” Boo-hoo!

Hey, “Rich” Lugar, this TEA Party will throw all you RINOs overboard!

What good is a Republican “Majority” in either the Senate or the House if the ONLY thing y’all can do is perform the “Bipartisan Cave-In” macorana?

He pushed the new start treaty with Russia in lame duck session. He knows Obama's background. He needs to go along with other career congressman.

McCain is another one, has done great damage with his defense bill that strips citizens of rights.

Without the Tea Party, the Democrats would still control the House, and have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

He's never been a RINO. His political positions are remarkably constant and have not changed since the days when Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan set the standards of Republican orthodoxy.

You really have to get over this belief that people you don't agree with are RINOs. Could be you yourself are really in the wrong party.

Interestingly enough, the owner of Lugar Farms sits on the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee. If I recall correctly Lugar Farms was raising trees for “Carbon sequestration”.

These politicians have forgotten when to go home. It’s time for you to go Dick! While we are at it, take McLame, Grahmnesty, and let’s go over to Congress and clean house there too! You guys have sucked this country dry, and we all will be paying for it for generations to come.
