Former Utah state Sen. Dan Liljenquist announced today that he is challenging Sen. Orrin Hatch at the state Republican convention in April.
Its time for a new generation of leaders to step up and take on the new challenges of today, Liljenquist says in a 43-second announcement video posted to his campaign website. Its time for us to live within our means as a country and to balance our budget. Its time to tackle the entitlement spending that threatens us all. And its time to return to the conservative principles that make this country great.
Liljenquist is the first major opponent to enter the race against Hatch and has the kind of tea party support that led to the defeat of former Sen. Bob Bennett at the 2010 state GOP convention.
National conservative groups including FreedomWorks and the Club for Growth have been searching for a Hatch opponent ever since Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R), once thought to be a major threat to Hatch, announced in August that he was running for re-election to his House seat. Neither group has endorsed Liljenquist yet.

While I readily acknowlege that Orrin Hatch’s past service has been honorable and has some positive accomplishments, it’s clear that he’s become part of the problem and has been in D.C. for too long. I wish that he would retire and hope that he’s defeated at the convention.
Waste of scarce resources to back this guy.
Orin "the Hack" Hatch is all 'boat and no float'. Always talks a good story about how he's going to fight Obama and the Dem's, but in the end, as the late Ted Kennedy's best friend in the Senate, he's just another washed up POS going along for the free ride
Even if the Republicans take the Senate, the Dem's will still be running it. It's called Ruling by Press Conference. There is no one better at a Presser than the the four (4) Senate WHORES: Reid, Durbin, Schumer and, none other than the pig-in-tennis-shoes; Patty Murray.
Utah has a convention during which ballots are cast and a primary occurs of no candidate wins 60% or more on the final ballot. If Orrin Hatch can be forced into a primary, we’ll have a chance to polish him off in the primary, which will consist disproportionately of strong, issue-oriented conservatives.
Given what happened to Bennett I think it’s quite possible conservatives could beat Hatch at the convention.
His seniority in the Senate Finance Committee is nothing in the face of his record. hatchrecord.com walks the real walk- he no longer represents true Conservatives. 16 debts ceiling increases- he’s voted for TARP, the PATRIOT ACT, the NDAA, SCHIP, MEDICARE PART D- and he sponsored the DREAM ACT. He’s a part of our problems and needs to step down
