Its no secret that Republican candidate Ron Paul is a favorite among liberal talk show hosts, but tonight Bill Maher vigorously defended the libertarians foreign policy positions and admitted they were more aligned with his own rather than President Obama. Maher fought with not just the panelists, but his own audience on this issue, dismissing most of them as brainwashed liberals unwilling to give Paul credit for taking a more progressive position on foreign issues than the president.
Maher admitted that Paul is the only Republican candidate who can get him to rise out of my chair and applaud. And while panelist Rob Reiner quipped this was only because of Pauls position on drugs, Maher declared himself a supporter of Ron Pauls views on foreign policy.
One of the things he says is, Weve got an empire. And we should bring all the troops home. Hes the one who is, really, in my heart on foreign affairs, not Barack Obama.
When Reiner noted that Mahers sentiments only got him a smattering of applause from the audience, Maher responded by stating that it was because most of them are brainwashed liberals. This was met by a mixed reaction from the crowd, including an aside from Reiner that this is the kind of audience Maher attracts.
David Frum noted that many liberals are still opposed to Paul because of his views on the social safety net, but others like Maher are willing to overlook that because he is the only candidate in the race that doesnt have a hawkish foreign policy position. Frum, however, gave credit to Rick Santorum, of all people, citing his willingness to talk about the middle class and upward mobility. He asked why Santorum gets no love from liberals for being more aligned with them on those issues despite his strong social conservatism as opposed to the love Paul gets despite being just as radical as his rivals (if not more so) on abolishing government agencies and other key issues.
Maher acknowledged that Santorum was the only candidate talking about upward mobility, but on other economic issues hes still aligned with the rest of his party. Frum tried to argue that starting a dialogue was the best way to start coming up with policy solutions, but Debbie Wasserman-Schultz noted that just because you say the word middle-class doesnt mean youre for the middle class.

Maher, Frum, Reiner and Little Debbie?
I couldn’t come up with a panel more brain-dead if I tried.
Get used to watching the libs fete (and fellate!) Dr. Paul for all they’re worth.
They’re just drooling in anticipation of him becoming the nominee, or, failing that, going Perot.
I couldn’t imagine looking at the video clip. Seeing these obnoxious libs arguing over whether Paul is right on foreign policy, or if Santorum is half-bad or all bad, would make me lose my lunch, and every other meal for the past few days. I mean, man, what a depressing thought being in that audience—don’t those people have walls to stare at at home? It’d be a lot more interesting and a lot less angry.
“Get used to watching the libs fete (and fellate!) Dr. Paul for all theyre worth.”
Ha! I won’t be watching that kind of fest. I have too much respect for myself. lol
“Yer in my heart, your in my soul”.....
Bill Maher is also a long time libertarian.
Weve got an empire. And we should bring all the troops home.
Dollars to donuts they weren’t “arguing” at all. The good doctor/rep is their Great White Hope. If that kook gets nominated Obama will breeze his way back to a 2nd term.
That’s why they love Paul so.
Why do you think they spent eight years slobbering over “Maverick” John McCain? They knew he was a sure loser.
Rob Reiner and Bill Maher saying something perceptive in the same day.
Was the Guinness Book of World Records on hand to record this?
You can bring the troops home but they aren’t going to stay home. Paul has a simplistic child-like view of the world and an even lower understanding of history.
The most dangerous people on Earth are those like Ron Paul who shrug a lot.
Atlas shrugged and the free market survived.
He has a HEART? He is VILE and EVIL!!
Bill Maher has a heart? Naaaahhhhh...
Ronny and Bill have alot in common.
The both love Code Pink and hate Reagan and hate the GOP
I would not trust the security of the free world and the capitalist system to an entertaining bit of fiction.
Oh, well, there you go. If this foul-mouthed paraphiliac is on board with Paul, I guess I am joining the Paulestinians, too.
We’ve come full circle.
‘Meathead’ as the voice of reason. Who ever knew?
Somewhere, Carrol O’Connor is smiling.
