As it turns out, Maine Republicans in a few towns will caucus this Saturday (January 28). The original plan I spoke with the Maine Republican Party about back in September revolved around the idea of holding caucuses within a window from February 4 and February 11 with a big reveal on that final date. That is still mostly true as most of the caucus venues will hold party meetings within that window. However, there are a few caucuses that branch out quite far from those two bookend dates. I meant for Bush in the primaries, NH went for McCain by a wide margin. Maine (caucuses not primary) went to Bush. Vermont, MA and RI were huge for McCain. CT was the closest, McCain edged Bush in the state of his birth by 2 or 3 points.

In 2000, Bush beat McCain in Maine, but it was a primary back then (as your link to Dave Leip makes clear).
McCain beat Bush in the NH primary 48%-30%, but Bush beat Gore in the general by a little over 1% to get the state’s 4 EVs and win the presidency.

Yes, it's striking how many have ties to multiple states. Even earlier in our history many a President was born in one state and mostly lived as an adult in another.
Newt, born and raised I think in PA, lived in Georgia most of his adult life, now lives in VA though he told the debate audience last night he was "from the neighboring state of Georgia". Mitt, tied to Michigan, MA, Utah and NH where he probably settled after his Governorship solely to suck up to the primary voters or to escape paying his own fines in MA.
Santorum was born in VA. Ron Paul, born and raised in Allegheny County PA!
Perry was the only one who was elected in the state of his birth.

Was Santorum born in VA or WV? IIRC he lived in WV as a child and in the Pittsburgh are starting at around age 12.
Wikipedia lists his place of birth as Winchester, Virginia. An independent city that is never the less the county seat of Frederick County. (Local government in VA and MD both seem weird to me.)
He was then raised in Berkeley County WV some 25 miles away from there and then Butler County PA. Then it says he finished HS in Lake County IL after his psychologist dad and nurse mom went to work at Great Lakes Naval Station.

That is why I was hoping to get some action started here with the Maine freepers. Nobody knows this thing starts tomorrow. If I start pinging Mainers, some will get annoyed wid me reel fass. (What if NEWT gets 0 votes tomorrow at the Lincoln caucus? Will it make FOXnews?)

You may be right that Romney and Paul may grab all the delegates there. Hopefully the media won’t give the caucuses prominence even if they do run the occasional story such as this one.
The news starved media definitely will report it. But even if Maine were to be largely ignored:
The regional media (Boston Globe, etc.) will report heavily on it, so Romney gets a boost in MA VT RI CT NY. That is a minimum.
If a caucus is held in the forest and nobody hears it, did it really happen?
It is delusional thinking that this early in the race nobody will notice that Newt and Santorum combine for 4% over the first 7 days.
