I remember in June of 2008 being at the gay Pride parade here in Chicago and talking to a man named David Valkema from the Log Cabin Republicans — a classic Cocktail Partier. He said — and I will never, ever forget this — “Sometimes we run a guy we just want to get rid of so we can be done with him for good. No one wants McCain to win, and I hope Obama wins, because he’ll be a new Jimmy Carter and then we can have a new Reagan later”. He said that McCain could have his run — and have the “one and done” shot at a national campaign — and then the party would be able to tell him to shut up and go away, much like what it did to Bob Dole after his spectacular loss.

We used to hear that kind of thing here before Palin and the tea party, I still don't feel comfortable speaking about how FR has been or is, as someone who has't been here so long, but it seems to me that we are a little more focused on and confident of, being able to make things change.

We don't have so many guys talking about the inevitable, and the unchangeable, the unbreakable conspiracies, the uselessness which only leaves cynicism and bitterness to cling to, we seem to think that we have a real shot at change, and at winning, it seems to me that we are more aggressive and now we are part of a wider, stronger, more confident, and capable, and better led, conservative movement.

Something’s going on, and it is definitely not for the betterment of the Grand Old Party!

quote from FR poster conservativejoy:

If some of the GOP insiders in PA know what they are talking about, a brokered convention is not going to happen.
Word around Pittsburg is that the GOP E has already brokered a deal between Santorum and Romney.

As far as the GOP is concerned, the only thing the primaries are deciding is who is going to take the top of the ticket.

Sickening.

Heads up. Rumor of a deal between Romney and Santorum camps. This person claims to have knowledge of this deal through an old established PA family who are pro-Romney but despise Santorum (for unstated reasons).

If this is true it throws the whole primary into turmoil.

I agree perfectly.

If the Republicans had wanted to win, they would have run the most credentialed nominee they could find and they would have run as hard as they can.

I think they are afraid of holding the financial bag and being blamed for the economic situation of 2012-2016. If the Republicans won 2012, and everything goes to pot, they know that the media will work hard to ensure that the Republicans are held responsible, even if we know it won’t be.

It’s my guess that the Republicans are hoping for a 2012 loss so there is no way to spin a good Democratic yarn about how it is not their fault.

At this point, the Republicans will run a superstar and hope to get both the House and Senate to boot. I honestly believe, if they win in 2016, they will at that point do some strong reforms, if they do have control of everything.

That’s why they don’t want Newt to win and are doing everything they can to beat him.

I’ve always thought Santorum was running for VP, with the added “benefit” of blocking Newt for Milt.

I don't even think bringing on someone as spectacular as Sarah Palin as VP could drag McCain across the finish line...

Yes. I’ve skipped around FR and found talk from those who live in PA, and it seems to be a known fact in that state.

In researching Santorum it became obvious the man is ambitious, greedy and without any sense of honor. People from PA say he is determined to be on the ticket, and if that means throwing his delegates to the pro-abortion, pro- gay agenda supporting Romney, St. Rick will do just that!

It has occurred to me that the GOP wouldn’t want this to leak out, as it may deflate Santorum’s surge and result in Gingrich gaining enormously during Super Tuesday. Many people support Santorum but hate Romeny, and vice-versa.

Certainly plausible and would partially explain why the R’s never took the gloves off when it came to 0bama’s past. But a funny thing happned on the way to the convention..McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. And she took the gloves off where they wouldn’t/couldn’t..and they (the cocktail party) expended at least as much energy running against her as they did 0bama.

The scare is very real. If the problems aren’t taken care of, you could be facing a decades long depression. That is very real.

However, if the people aren’t ready for tough measures, they will blame the party in power for doing the necessary steps, as if that party was responsible for heartlessly cutting social programs or greedily raising taxes.

Also, thanks to a treasonous media who will not tell the truth, the media will do everything in its power to blame the Republicans for the mess. Remember 1996 to 1999, when those four years led to balanced budgets and even a bit of debt repayment?

Guess who got blamed for that one, for not jacking up entitlements and cutting people off of welfare? Zero credit for putting the books back together.

I know it sucks, but I think the Republicans do want to fix this country, but they don’t want to wear a generation of blame for hurting dependent people. If they do, they will be out of real power for years to come and the Democrats will rule for a generation, getting lauded for fixing the financial problems without having lifted a single pencil to do it.

"It’s my guess that the Republicans are hoping for a 2012 loss so there is no way to spin a good Democratic yarn about how it is not their fault."

"Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Gen George Patton, 31 May 1944

The establishment hated this man and did everything in their power to minimize him through the press. Was he a premidona? Hell yes, he wore it with pride but he would not spin the truth. The establishment is playing the same stupid game with this election as well. They know that Romney does not have the stones or the support from within the crony establishment insiders who fund his campaign and Super PACs to do the tough things necessary to turn things around. We already know the next four years are going to be tougher than the last four but the ship will never start to turn unless the rudder is turned. They are vested in keeping the money spigot flowing in their direction only and will destroy anyone who proposes a plan to do otherwise. Only the true conservatives have the answer to taking the steering locks out of the wheelhouse and until the general electorate figure this out, we will stay headed directly at the icebergs ahead.

So the answer is to just let it all go to hell in a hand basket? Well guess what Chicken Little? Republicans will get the blame anyway because they will be shown to have had the answers but were to chicken to ring the bell. Refer back to my earlier quote from Patton. Rising with him on the same theme is Adm. David Farragut.

Hate to break it to you, but Santorums tax returns show he earned $923,000 last year

He lives in an inflation-value-boosted upper MIDDLE CLASS NoVa tract mansion woth less than a million

Now, that may seem rich unless you live here in the DC area, but that is not “greedy and ambitious “ by any standards here

In fact that would make him one of the most modestly financially successful people to run for potus

There are actually idiots in PA who ate up the democrat campaign that Santorum, living in VA as a Senator from PA, enrolled his kids in a homeschool-based online PA charter school at PA resident rates, as an example of his “greed”

Oh then there is the “K street project” (muttered darkly as if Santorum was pulling down $90M bonus from Fanny - oh wait that was Frank Raines never mind)

“K Street”, that dastardly partisan effort by lobbies to get REPUBLICANS hired by local policy wonks so that REPUBLICANS would influence govt policy

oh the humanity

Isn’t that wonderful?

The truth of the matter is that unless the good people of America have a real appreciation of the situation and the danger, it’s almost a waste of time for the Republicans to do anything, because if they were willing to fall on their swords and martyr themselves for the cause of righting America, the lack of appreciation of the people would ensure it’s 1996-1999 all over again. 2012-2016 would just be another aberration of a long-continued path towards national bankruptcy.

Do you love me now, for spelling it out to you? :)

Sure I love you brother, but I also think you are very wrong. If you look at it closer, the Republicans vs the republicans (notice the little R) is what is wrong with the whole picture. The GOP-e is nothing more than the good cop - bad cap assimilation with the socialist Democrats to bleed us into a two class society. Shall I say anymore than what we hear from establishment types such as Orin Hatch, Mitch McConnell, John Boehnor, et al, who before making any kind of comment always blurts out “My good friends on the other side of the aisle” qualifier?

That is their protective cover phrase to their colleagues they are about to follow with a veiled critique that is not to be taken seriously and only uttered for the consumption of the masses.

My point is that I have ceased to give a rats petookie about the establishment, especially the Republicans, in that they care a whit about the future of our country and only care about the future of their power to rule over us. Face it, the establishment rides in and drives the bus and We the People are nothing more than the fuel to get them where they want to go, total domination of the dumasses.

This whole American experiment has been the saddle burr in elitists pants for a long time and they are just about to kill it. We don’t have until 2016 to turn the rudder and at times I wonder if we have until January 20, 2013.

One of the underlying premises assumes that the Republican Party establishment has a long-term, strategic plan. This basic assumption is false. The Republcan Party establishment couldn’t find its @ss with both hands and a roadmap.
