Missouri: State Auditor Tom Schweich Eyeing Senate Bid
Roll Call ^ | March 7, 2012 | Joshua Miller

Posted on 03/07/2012 2:34:16 PM PST by Clintonfatigued

The GOP field against vulnerable Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill might not be set yet.

Show-Me State Auditor Tom Schweich is considering entering the race, according to a Missouri Republican familiar with his thinking. Schweich supporters have even filed paperwork with the IRS to begin the process of setting up an organization that could support his campaign. That news was first tweeted by Greg Giroux of Bloomberg News.Businessman John Brunner, former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman and Rep. Todd Akin (Mo.) are the current contenders for the GOP nomination. Some Missouri Republicans have groused for months that their field could be stronger against McCaskill, whom they see as a weak incumbent.

“I don’t know if he’s fully in yet, but he is getting a lot of encouragement from prominent Republican donors,” a state Republican source said.

Schweich, an attorney, served as chief of staff to three U.S. ambassadors to the United Nations and as a principal deputy assistant secretary of state.

The filing deadline for Missouri is March 27. Roll Call rates the Missouri Senate race as Tossup.

I would have liked for Jim Talent to come back, not only due to his name I.D., but hecause he was such a smart and capable member of the Senate, a man who really lived up to his name. But absent Talent, I’ll take Tom Schweich. The rest of the field is currently underwhelming the local Republican voters.

I’m down for Sarah Steelman. Doing a little internet searching convinces me that she’s a conservative who is NOT AFRAID of standing her ground and who has a squeaky clean background.

Sen. Claire McCaskill is the she-witch who’s tried for years to change the US Constitution to let Obama and all other anchor babies be eligible for POTUS.

You don’t like Congressman Akin? His record in the House has been superb.

Akin is good on the issues, but bad on the campaign trail. Part of the problem is that he’s always run in safely Republian constituancies and never faced a competitive general election.

A month ago, Public Policy Polling had Sarah Steelman up by 9 over Akin. Over Brunner by much more.
Schweich may be getting a nudge from the establishment Republicans in MO. who despise Steelman with every fiber in their $1000, suits.

I like Steelman. Rock solid Conservative, has a lot of spine and is not afraid to mix it up.

Also wanna pimp this group - This is their facebook page. I've bought a couple of their bumperstickers too

I’m sure that Sarah Steelman is a good person, but that doesn’t make her a good candidate.

So far Steelman vs. Akin seems to be a decent fought race. So unlike Steelman vs. Holshuf. A vicious knife fight. Both so beat up that Jay Nixon walked into the Gov. Mansion. We need no repeats of that. And so far both blasting Ma and Obi and that is the way I like it.

Sarah Steelman has come out strongly in favor of Right to Work legislation now being considered in Jeff City. House Speaker Tilley has endorsed her. Yet he has called RTW "useless." Go figure. Very strange year...

Talent (former Sen.) , Billy Long and now Roy Blunt are supporting Romney. Not sure how that will filter down to the Senate race come Nov.

Steelman, Akin and Brunner answered questions submitted by attendees at the Lincoln Days event on March 3. Akin was strong and concise with his answers but Steelman tended to ramble on without specifics. Brunner did well considering his inexperience.
I went in expecting Steelman to dominate the proceedings but was impressed with Akin.

Good to see you’re still around - best regards.

After the way Talent has been in his support of Romney, the establishment and abject hatred of Newt, he is toast to me.

I was hoping he’d jump into the gubernatorial race.

As of now the likely GOP nominee for that is random millionaire Dave Spence.

I would have no prob voting for either Akin/Steelman. I know little of Brunner. Late comer. Didn't participate in early debates. Nothing against him, just don't know him-yet. And not sure if we need a fourth candidate-Schweich.

Having watched the early debates, via PC, I did note S. Steelman seemed a bit "disjointed" from time to time. Sentence structure, etc.

Just hope the strongest candidate emerges and sends "Air-Claire" flying off. Enough of this woman!
