Utahs primary isnt for another three months, but Sen. Orrin Hatchs electoral fate could be sealed next week.
The six-term GOP senator is trying to avoid following in the footsteps of his colleague, Bob Bennett, who not only lost reelection in 2010, but failed to make it out of his partys convention and onto the primary ballot.
When freshman Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R) declined to run, there was a sense that Hatch was out of the woods. But now-former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist is in the race and is regarded as a very formidable threat to the senator.
Tuesdays precinct caucuses are extremely important because thats where the delegates will be selected for the party convention on April 21.
The entire process is complicated by the fact that there are multiple, simultaneous competitive GOP races including crowded fields in the 2nd and 4th congressional districts and candidates trying to knock of Gov. Gary Herbert (R). All of them will be trying to get supporters elected as delegates on caucus night.

go Dan go
This is a chance to get another TEA Party conservative in the U.S. Senate (Indiana and Nebraska also are). I think that Dan Liljenquist has the potential to be a great U.S. Senator and I hope that Utah conservatives make this convention and primary a top priority.
PLEASE Utahans - Bob Bennett Orrin Hatch. Oh how I remember him wearing his bow tie thinking his was the most important man on earth giving conservatives the condescension. The phrase “Don’t count your Hatches before they chicken” was 100% spot on.
“The phrase Dont count your Hatches before they chicken was 100% spot on.”
I like the phrase.
This is a race where I hope we can get some fresh conservative blood into the Senate.
You betcha!
So far as Mitt's concerned win or lose for Hatch, Mitt's got his support.
Switching gears, what about Governor? Is the incumbent Herbert the guy to back?
I’m in the dark with respect to Gov. Herbert. He seems to get as little national press as the WY Governor, Matt Mead. If he’s a clone of the slimy little Zerobot weasel Huntsman, he should go, but I know so little about him that I can’t give an educated opinion on him. I’d rather get some input from Utahns.
fyi:
Huntsman is a cousin to Mitt. Think the grandfather with five wives in Mexico. THe Huntsman family fortune is intertwined with Bain.
