Vanity: Resigned to Romney? No Way! It's Time for Real Conservatives to Organize
28 April 2012 | Yashcheritsiy

Posted on 04/28/2012 5:36:53 PM PDT by Yashcheritsiy

I posted this up in News/Activism because it is a call to activism, and therefore seemed to me to fit the bill.

This is a "caucus" thread - if you're a pro-Romney whiner, then go find another thread. This one is for conservatives who want to do something about the election besides hang our heads and timidly thump a tub for Mittens.

I've intended this thread to hang around for a while so that we can throw ideas back and forth and start trying to network, etc. If you're really interested in organizing for action, please feel free to join in. If you want to hang back and not get actively involved, well, feel free to join in or lurk too.

Thanks, Yashcheritsiy

The primary in my home state is May 8 and I won’t be voting for Romney. I’m trying to remain hopeful for a brokered convention.

Hi Guys,

I felt moved to post this thread with the intent of providing a dedicated place where we can go beyond mere grousing about the current state of affairs to trying to come up with substantive ways to deal with it.

I humbly beg your sufferance, Milords!

We better hope for lots of 3rd party voters to get out to the polls because Romney won’t get the job done.

I’ll probably vote for Virgil Goode and I want to get rid of Debbie Stupidcow.

What I'm doing is this.

1. Assisting some friends who are precinct delegate candidates.
2. Working with them to make sure the right individuals are party leaders.
3. Making sure good candidates are nominated in our August primary. I will be voting for Peter Konetchy for Senate. He's a constitutionalist.
4. This fall, I will be working to re-elect Tim Walberg and working to defeat Debbie Stupidnow. I haven't decided yet for POTUS.

Resigned to Romney?

Yeah, kind of. Is there anything productive we can do to avoid Romney and the unmentionable one? Is there a viable 3rd-party candidate? Is there a way to end up with a convention floor fight and have Romney lose? Do we need a new party?

Not in this lifetime.

If anyone comes up with a good idea let me know, I sure don’t see much we can do about it now.

Remember his poll number stayed around 50%, meaning 50% of republicans are so friggin stupid they voted for the RepubliDem.

Right On!

The Republican Elite-Tea Party War will continue until one or the other is pushed out, we cannot peacefully coexist together.

Romney has flip the Bird to want was suppose to be the GOP base, I.E. The Conservatives, he was gained the Nomination without them. He cannot win the General however with out us, Now we must focus on our Local Elections, that is how we will gain this country back, from the Bottom Up, NOT the Top Down (or inside out as the Vile Despicable Van Jones says)

G-D Save us Conservatives.

No and no.

There is no 3rd party candidate with any chance whatsoever of beating Obama and there will not be a brokered convention. There will be one man on the ballot that has a chance of beating Barack Obama. His name is Mitt Romney. If you want to defeat Obama, vote for him. If you want to send some kind of message or make a statement, vote for someone else and accept a second term for President Obama. But make no mistake, bury your delusions, these are your only choices.

So now what?

Stop whining, you lost. I may not like the direction, but you are losers to think it is going elsewhere. Romney is going to be the nominate and you are just “pissing in the wind” to think else.If you think your drive for a third party or brokered convention is viable, you are clueless. You can destroy the chance to OUT the current office holder, if you continue your ways. Grow up.

Those guys are running independently anyway. Paul inserted himself in the Republican primary schedule just to get his message across.

So, can Paul beat Obama? He couldn't beat Romney either.

Looking to the future the RNC has to limit candidates to those who are not candidates in other parties, those who've never made donations to candidates of other parties, those who've never served in public office having been elected as a member of another party, or who have not accepted an appointed position by another party.

By my evaluation of the whole line up of Republican candidates this year there are 3 of them who would have been eligible to run under those simple rules.

They would have been Caine, Santorum and Gingrich.

I"d think we'd made our selection by now ~ you'll note also they're all three Conservative.

So, what to do now? I think we can take a page from the Mittbot handbook ~ it's called Change The Rules At The Last Minute.

That's just a broad proposal ~ no doubt there are folks out there with practical ideas regarding how we might do that ~ and that presumes we have any inroads with any of the party officials running the convention.

We should certainly work to defeat romney and hope for a brokered convention. Although frankly that no longer seems likely.

If, as seems likely, the GOP decides to commit suicide, then somehow or other we need to unite behind a third party candidate. Or, to be more hopeful, a new second party candidate, since the GOP is determined to dump any remaining shreds of morality and common sense and go the way of the Whigs.

How to do that, I don’t know. It certainly won’t be easy. We need some trustworthy leadership. The only person I can think of to do it would be Sarah Palin, whether as organizer or as candidate (I wish!).

In any case, the libertarians among us need to realize two things.

1. No way conservatives can possibly win without a solid union of social conservatives and libertarians.

2. Also, no way that a free Republic is even possible unless a majority are willing to discipline themselves in the right way—which means to obey the basic moral laws, have stable families, do away with stuff like abortion, and return to the values that made our country great in the first place.

If anyone thinks that freedom means every man for himself, and everytone do whatever he damn well likes, then we are cooked. It’s OK if a few people on the fringes act like that, but if a majority does, then as Hobbes long ago argued, dictatorship is inevitable. If you cannot choose to do the right thing freely, then the government will do it for you—and they will have very peculiar ideas what the right thing is, as we are seeing right now.

The only way to win an election is to hold your base and peel off a faction from the other party.

Mitt starts off with a couple of real problems ~ he's given up the Republican party's Conservative base. The Democrat affiliated factions already have their boy ~ so why should they trade him in for more of the same?

To put it bluntly, Mitt can't win against this or any other Democrat whose able to hold the Democrat base together.

To put it bluntly, Mitt can't win against this or any other Democrat whose able to hold the Democrat base together.

Mitt's one advantage is that he's facing off against a bad President in a bad economy. If he was facing Bill Clinton in '96, I'd agree with you. I'm not ready to write of Romney's chances quite yet. Yes, he's going to lose conservative votes. The question remains is whether or not he'll be able to pick up the middle that voted for Obama and are now unhappy with him.

That Romney will lose is a given.

Better to use the time productively.

Those of us who are committed pro-life conservatives would never dream of voting for a pro-abortion candidate.

Those who are thoughtful conservatives will vote principle over party every time.

Thanks for the thread!

Don’t know that I have anything profound to add. Two points:

First, supporting good Congressional and Senatorial candidates seems to be a priority. Different ways to do that: Contributing directly to the candidate, contributing to a conservative PAC, or getting involved directly. The last method may not be the most efficient, but it can be the most interesting. I have personally (with a few friends) run ads in newspapers for a conservative candidate. (One paper, I’m assuming with a liberal perspective, wouldn’t run the ad.) After I retire in perhaps 3 or 4 years, I might try radio ads, billboards, and other things. You can run a decent ad in a small town newspaper for about $100. If I remember correctly, a block of about twenty radio spots can be had for between $1000 and $2000 (don’t quote me on the price; going from vague memories). Seems like a billboard ran $500 to $1500. (Once again, don’t quote me. Very vague memories.) Other methods are available as well.

Second, I won’t be voting for either Romney or Obama. For a social conservative, neither seems to be an option; and giving the GOP-e reason to think that they have a lock on our vote regardless of the nominee will only guarantee increasingly liberal candidates in the future. I could say a lot, lot more, but perhaps you get the picture.

When someone says we should organize I automatically ask the question, “organize around what?”

I’m willing to coalesce, organize with, unify with, anyone who is in truth working for a return to America’s founding principles, the stated purposes of our Constitution, and adherence to the explicit requirements of that precious document.

As I've explained many times THERE IS NO MIDDLE.

We have a political system that works with people in groups ~ and those groups affiliate with one or the other of the two great political parties.

In numerous European countries they work it the other way around so you end up with dozens of political parties representing broad general interests or socio-economic classes, and they do their coalitions AFTER the elections.

Our system works to deliver us a fairly evenly divided electorate ~ so that you get a landslide if you get as much as 53% of the vote.

Outside of the two coalition parties there is a thin fringe of unaffiliated people. It's not a broad middle ~ more like a desert.

LBJ used that model in mind to win in a landslide against the first guy who'd proposed it ~ Goldwater! Nixon used it to win twice. Ronald Reagan used it to win three times (two times for himself and once for GHWBush). Bill Clinton won with that model ~ twice, while crushing a third party attempt. George Bush pulled it off as well.

All Obama has to do is hold the Democrats together while Romney himself delivers up the equivalent of a faction to the Democrats ~ in the body of people who simply aren't going to show up if Romney is on the ticket.

You can run anybody but Romney and beat Obama, particularly if he can attract that 53% of recent (Last 5 years) college graduates who are UNEMPLOYED.

Yep! Them's your choices! But make no mistake, the next President of the United States will be one of the following two men: Barack Obama or Mitt Romney.

Yes, it sucks but the sooner everyone accepts that this is the reality of the situation, the sooner everyone can come to terms with the choices they will have to make.

Oh, yeah....One more thing. I will likely be voting third party rather than a write-in. I’m considering the Constitution Party (Virgil Goode) and America’s Party (Tom Hoefling). I don’t assume that either will stand a snowball’s chance, but that isn’t the reason for the vote.

Virgil Goode would seem to be the most reasonable choice, since the Constitution Party is much more prominent. I think, though, that given the current climate, he could have chosen a better route to take in terms of issues. Social conservatives are being left out in the cold; yet Virgil isn’t really pushing that. His main emphasis seems to be illegal immigration. While I agree with his points, I don’t think that will be a major rallying cry for conservatives this time. Plus, he seems to be cosying up to the Ron Paul faction more than to traditional conservatives. Yet, I generally agree with him on the issues.

I’m more comfortable with Tom Hoefling (our Eternal Vigilance), but America’s Party doesn’t have the same level of exposure at this point.

Once again, I have no illusion that either will win; but I think that the GOP-e needs to know for future reference that our votes cannot be considered automatic.
