‘Julia’ ad fascinating for its sheer ideological purity

President Obama’s new web campaign ad, “The Life of Julia,” (watch) is perhaps the most blatantly statist political advertisement yet from one of the two major parties. Pitched, I suspect to single women, primarily those college-aged and worried about the responsibilities of adulthood, it posits that government programs are essential to every stage of a woman’s life. It’s fascinating for its sheer ideological purity.

From Head Start as a toddler to Social Security and community gardens volunteering late in life, big government is the most intimate partner of Julia’s life. Once Julia’s taken advantage of ObamaCare to stay on her parent’s health care plan until she’s 26, dad and mom disappear from her life. When Julia decides to have a child in her mid-30s, there’s nary a mention of a dad or father. In fact, when Julia’s son Zachary turns into an adult, he disappears from Julia’s life. Julia only gets fair pay because government allows her to obtain equal pay. She become a Web designer because Barack Obama helped make it possible.

Julia does have her demons. They are Mitt Romney, Rep. Paul Ryan, and the rest of the Republicans, eager to destroy her life at every opportunity. The savior of Julia’s life is President Obama and federal spending, which dictates every positive development through the several decades of her life. The assumption is that deficits don’t matter, that federal spending can last forever, that through every step of life, Democrats can hold a woman’s hand and use taxpayers’ money to provide a happy life.

It’s an audacious — and insulting – ad. It wll be interesting to see if it works for the president’s campaign team.

This will be the best ad - best anti Obama ad that is - of the entire campaign. Neither the RNC nor Mitt’s minion’s nor Rove et al will dare be this ideological.

Finally a good creative person for conservatives, and damned if they don’t work for Obama Biden 12.

Julia is said to be a web designer but the great majority of those jobs are men.

Head start began as a parents participation program. I went with my kid to the school. The parents were in one room. The kids were in another.

In the long run, I found no benefit. They were just as happy playing with the neighborhood kids instead of the monotonous structure of head start.

It's nothing more than a baby sitting program now.

Go back to the old days. The kids go to kindergarten and mom has to watch the kids.

The author makes a great point.

The Julia ad is strikingly honest.
It’s who Democrats are, it’s what they do.

In fact, when Julia’s son Zachary turns into an adult, he disappears from Julia’s life.

My theory: Julia is just a complete bitch who makes life a living hell for anyone around her. I bet her collective farm community garden clears out when she shows up after retirement.

Sounds more like Julia should be a single, white, elementary school teacher celebrating Kwanzaa and Earth Day and teaching the children about anti-bullying and climate change.

Julia opposed the state, in 1984.

Liberals may have stepped in it once again, with their adoption of “Julia”.

Here’s a really great summary written 5 years ago at the following site: “Why Winston Smith loved Julia in ‘1984’”:

-

Julia represents what he wishes he could actively stand for i.e. the opposition of the state. And by loving her, he may feel he is resisting the state, so he is a bit of a coward as he is only internally opposing the state, at least at the start of their relationship.

Not surprisingly, Iowahawk summed it up best (shame about the typo, though):
"I'm not surprise by campaign ads depicting a bleak totalitarian future. I just didn't expect it as a campaign promise."

So how is Head Start different from the rest of school?

Life long day care.

Several problems with the whole Julia thing.

Will she even be allowed to be born? Dims love abortion.
Web designer? Like the web designers in China? Told what is acceptable and what is not?
No mention of her daily ration of govt cheese.

What if she rebels and wants to become a (gasp) stay at home mom with 6 kids all allowed to be born, stays married to the same guy and becomes a born again christian?

Great catch and great quote.

I sense that whoever is responsible for the “Julia” ad, remembered the same quote as you posted. The name they chose is no coincidence....

She will be limited to one child. Her false consciousness will be corrected in a reeducation camp, or “Love Camp.”

They get to label them sooner?? which translates to more aid....

If Johnny wiggles, he's add. If Johnny's shy AND DOESN'T LOOK YOU IN THE EYE, he's autistic.

My friend went through this add crap...They told the school to go to hell....NO MEDS....No further conversation.

The girl is a doctor now and parents are sooooo proud. Good parents...."KNOW YOUR OWN KID".

I watched the add. It's idea of typical life is disturbing.

During college, Julia undergoes surgery. For what? Abortion, sterilization, nose job...?

Not saying it couldn't be for cancer or something important, possible, but not typical.

Thanks to Obamacare, her health insurance is required to cover birth control and preventive care, letting Julia focus on her work rather than worry about her health. My goodness, even they call it "Obamacare,"!!!! Plus another reference that Julia never worry about getting an abortion conveniently labeled "preventive care,"

My word, I'm glad I didn't marry a typical woman!

Moral of the story: it used to take a village, now it takes a government.
