The four candidates vying for outgoing Congressman Tim Johnsons seat Jerry Clarke, Rodney Davis, Erika Harold and Kathy Wassink presented their platforms to Champaign voters at a public forum Saturday evening.
The forum was led by Champaign County Republican Party chair Habeeb Habeeb, one of the 14 Republican Party chairmen who will decide May 19 which finalist will be the GOPs candidate for the 13th district race that Johnson pulled out of soon after the March primaries.
I really care about winning the race, said Habeeb, who estimated the attendance at 250 people. (This district) leans slightly Democrat, just barely, so any one of them can be a great candidate, but I want the candidate who can appeal and win that race.
That candidate, armed with the GOP ticket, will have the task of going up against Democrat David Gill, who lost to Johnson in three prior elections. But beating Gill may prove more difficult in a district that Habeeb calls gerrymandered.

May 19 is when the convention will choose a candidate. All of them seem acceptable, as far as I can tell. Erika Harold seems to be the most conservative. Tim Johnson’s move seems to have been designed to get Jerry Clarke, his Chief of Staff, nominated. I don’t approve of denying primary voters the right to choose a successor. However, that doesn’t automatically mean that Clark knew about it.
Input from Illinois Freepers is especially appreciated.
Not “automatically,” but didn’t Clarke create a campaign committee a week or two prior to Johnson’s unexpected retirement? Or am I thinking of another Johnson aide?
I hope Erika Harold gets the nomination—she’d be a conservative superstar in Congress, and could go on to bigger and better things.
I hope Harold wins as well, I’ll be disappointed when she probably doesn’t. The other 3 are less than inspiring. I don’t want anything to do with subpar Johnson’s COS.
Rodney Davis is also a former Congressional staffer (I don’t know if it was for Johnson) and is described by Red State as a state party insider, which means he must be the worst choice. Never heard of the other lady Kathy Wassink, Red State calls her a “9/12 activist” whatever the hell that is.
Champaign County Republican Party chair Habeeb Habeeb and the unnamed “most analysts” are wrong when they call the seat slightly rat. I don’t know for sure that Bush would have carried it but I think so. Kirk and Brady easily would have. I’d have been worried if State Rep. Hoffman stayed in the race but David Gill isn’t winning jack.
