Bauer, Rice lead in FMU/SCNOW.com poll (South Carolina new district)

Former Lt. Governor Andre Bauer and Horry County Council Chair Tom Rice hold a substantial lead in the race for the Republican nomination for the new 7th Congressional District seat according to a new poll commissioned by Francis Marion University and SCNOW.com. But the overall temerity of the campaign has left many voters still scratching their heads less than a month before the June 12 primary.

Bauer leads the nine-person field of Republican candidates with 22 percent of the 641 likely GOP primary voters polled, followed closely by Rice with 21 percent. Chad Prosser is third with 8 percent. A whopping 35 percent of those polled said they were still undecided.

Carey Crantford, principal with Crantford and Associates, the Columbia-based research firm that conducted the poll on behalf of FMU/SCNOW.com, said the large number of undecided voters did not surprise him. “Undecideds are always driven by the aggressiveness of this campaign,” said Crantford. “There’s not a whole lot going in the campaign yet, so voters just aren’t sure. It’s all going to close very fast.”

I was totally unaware that SC had gained a House seat.

This race has boiled down to two front-runners in a nine-candidate field. Andre Bauer is erratic and I don’t think he would be a good Congressman. Tom Rice seems to be a pretty good choice, a CPA with an electoral base in the population center. Admittedly, I don’t know a lot about the candidates.

The primary is June 12 with a runoff two weeks later.

SC got one of the last seats in reapportionment. Republicans controlled the redistricting process for the first time in a while (RAT Gov. Hodges could and did veto maps after the 2000 Census), and they drew 6 GOP districts and one black-majority Dem district. With John Spratt gone (and the SC-05 shored up a bit), there most likely will be a 6-1 GOP House delegation from SC for at least the next decade.

Thanks for the ping. Agreed, Bauer is not the man for the job.

So Lt. Gov. Leadfoot wants to get back into elected office, huh? The guy was a cipher in office. All he was known for was (a) an unfortunate physical resemblance to Rudolf Hess, (b) getting pulled over by a state trooper for doing 100+ near Laurens and trying to talk his way out of it, and (c) getting a Columbia PD officer to pull a gun on him and put him on the ground during a traffic stop outside the Statehouse.

Oh yeah, and (d) maybe helping to break the “South American hottie” story that wrecked Mark Sanford.

Nobody will win this race absent a runoff. Stopping the creepy Bauer is of paramount importance, as he will likely win one of the runoff slots.

Tom Rice:

“...I’ll Fight to Defend the Constitution
…including the right to life and our Second Amendment rights. I’ll also work to reignite a respect for the Tenth Amendment that empowers states and makes Washington less significant in each of our lives.

I’ll Fight to Secure our Border
…and make English the official language, while simplifying the rules for those who want to come here legally. Our porous border endangers national security and hurts our economy.

I’ll Fight for Term Limits
…because far too many politicians put too high of a priority on re-election. We should honor the Founders’ intent of a real citizen-legislature.

Don’t forget when Lt. Gov. Leadfoot compared the poor to stray animals. He is South Carolina’s (Joe Biden) if he gets the nomination I think he will gaffe his way to helping elect the Democrat.

While seat is not safe Republican (45% Osama) and the rats have at least 1 real candidate in State Rep Joe Vick, I doubt the democrat would actually win.

But don’t want Bauer in office.

Thanks for the ping Impy.

Let's hope our SC neighbors use common sense and vote for someone other than Crazy Bauer.

Big developemnt: Democrats thought they had a strong candidate in state Representative Ted Vick, but he just got arrested on drunk driving and illegal weapons posession charges. Whoever wins the Republican nominee will be the next Congressman.

Good news indeed for conservatives and Republicans; not so much for Mr. Vick.

A "while"? You mean 1872 wasn't the last time? ;d

Here’s yet another update- Ted Vick dropped out of the race, leaving DemocRATS without a credible candidate.
