As Massachusetts Democrats meet at their nominating convention today, some members of the Cherokee Nation are stepping up a campaign to get answers about candidate Elizabeth Warrens claims of tribal ancestry a sideshow controversy that has nevertheless begun to wobble one of the most closely-watched Senate campaigns in the country.
This week, Indian reporters say they were snubbed by Warrens campaign as they sought clarification on why Ms. Warren was listed as a minority Native faculty by Harvard in the 1990s, even though she has no evidence to back that claim and apparently never sought out other Native Americans on campus.
Jim Barnett, a spokesman for the incumbent Republican, Scott Brown, did talk to Indian Country magazine, noting that any time a person tries to attach themselves to a group of people without rationale for doing so, except for maybe personal gain, it seems very seedy to me.
A group of Cherokees has set up a website disputing Warrens claims, and some tribal members said they may protest the Democratic nominating convention in Springfield, Mass., today.
While Warren is expected to win the Democratic Party endorsement, one challenger, Marisa DeFranco, may well pick up enough support to force a primary showdown in September. So far, Democrats continue to support Warren, who trails Brown by two points in the latest polls the same margin as before the ancestry kerfuffle broke. But Ms. DeFranco has said Warrens inability to adequately address the ancestry questions is hurting Democrats chances of retaking a Senate seat held by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy....

If she were a Repub the LIEberal media would have already massacred and scalped her by now. As it is she gets a free pass but glad the real Cherokees are on the warpath over her fraudulent claims.
It's going to be so entertaining to watch her twisting in the wind for the next five months.
I really don’t think Ms. DiFranco has a chance of getting 15%. Democrat voters don’t care about liars. If they did obama wouldn’t have gotten elected.
Note to headline writer: Use "tomahawk" in place of "hammer."
Lizzy W. is just another White Woman “that speaks with forked tongue.”
Is Dead Ted still in the seat?
So, let me get this straight.
The person claiming to be Cherokee refuses to talk to the real Cherokees?
Gee. I wonder why?
“The person claiming to be Cherokee refuses to talk to the real Cherokees?”
No you don’t have it straight. This is closer to straight:
The person claiming to be Cherokee HOPING IT WOULD CREATE OPPORTUNITIES TO MEET OTHER PEOPLE LIKE HER refuses to talk to the real Cherokees?
So gee. We both probably wonder why even more?
The Indians have NOTHING to stand on.
Eliz. Warren is a DNC candidate and what she
says “GOES” even if fabricated (like Obama, himself).
Perfect nickname for her, Jokeahontas.
She’s horrible.
Howie Carr has really been savaging her in his Herald columns. She’s a phony as a 3 dollar bill.
She only knows “how” and “kemo sabe” and is afraid she will be found out.
With all the hollering about her degree of Cherokee ancestry, it’s important to perhaps point out that the issue wasn’t historically of great concern to the Cherokee themselves.
The great chief of the Cherokee throughout their period of confrontation with the US was John Ross. He was 1/8 Cherokee and 7/8 Scottish.
His acceptance as chief despite his relatively low percentage of “Cherokee blood” may have been partly because the Cherokee traced descent thru the maternal line, like orthodox Jews.
