When Minnesota fifth-grader Tyler Sullivan skipped school to attend an campaign event with Barack Obama Friday, the president wrote his teacher a note which read: Please excuse Tyler.... He was with me!
So what explains Obamas unexcused absence from the Wisconsin recall election?
The president was just a short helicopter ride away from the Badger State this weekend. He attended three events in Minnesota and then traveled to nearby Chicago to take some time off in his home state. But he didnt come to Wisconsin. In fact, Obama hasnt set food in Wisconsin for months. Why?
The answer is inescapable: Barack Obama is afraid of Scott Walker.
Obama is still popular in Wisconsin. According to a recent Marquette University poll , the president enjoys a 52 percent approval rating and leads Mitt Romney 51-43 among likely voters in the state a comfortable 8-point margin. So why not spend some of that political capital to help Democrat Tom Barrett defeat Walker on Tuesday?
After all, wasnt the Walker recall supposed to be the great liberal cause of 2012? When Walker pushed through collective-bargaining reform over the objections of Wisconsin Democrats, the Left warned that conservatives had gone too far. Wisconsin was a union state, they said, and in taking on the public-sector worker unions, Republicans had dug their own political grave. Moreover, Obama had promised to stand with the unions . During the 2008 campaign, Obama declared [I]f American workers are being denied their right to organize when Im in the White House, I will put on a comfortable pair of shoes and I will walk on that picket line with you as president of the United States.
But when the fight came, and the unions called, Obama failed to show up...

That would be upside down.
I was thinking back in January that a Gingrich/Walker combo would make an awsome ticket
Sorry; that just jumped out at me at 5am, after 1st coffee. WashCompost's proofreader must be asleep at desk.
Dear Mayor Barrett,
Please excuse my absence there was just no political upside to visiting you in WI. Barack Obama
Dump Willard for Walker 2012 !
When Walker clobbers Scott by 12.3%, it will be a big “downside” and 0bummer will be well-distanced from it.
Barrett, not Scott. Need more coffee.
Obama may not be there, but you can bet Holder’s boys will be there to contest the vote.
We need him here....you can’t have him.....
The inescapable conclusion for me is that Barack Obama is not as popular as the likeability polls would have one believe. As president, his POLICIES have to be liked also, to have a positive effect on what’s going on in Wisconsin.
How he’s likeable is beyond me. He reminds me of the rich kid in high school who used to have to buy friends. He was so reviled because he constantly had to remind us how great his father was.
I agree with you.
How can anyone who likes and will vote for Scott Walker possibly approve of Obama.
These polls are full of it.
All the vice presidency does is neutralize a good man or woman by giving them a nothing job
If Walker wins let him become a national speaker while continuing to govern the State of Wisconsin into prosperity
and keep the Alinskey-left from “Palinizing” him by filing malicious frivolous lawsuits that make it impossible for him to do so
Walker should be at the top of the ticket.
Unquestionably, he’s the most courageous conservative politician in America today.
Nobody else comes close. Nobody. They’re little more than talking heads when compared with this guy.
Having said that, I believe Walker might accomplish considerably more in Wisconsin by finishing his term before he entered the “big ring”. This would have the effect of making him even more formidable on the national stage.
But.... perhaps duty calls.
A question for anyone reading this, even those who have previously stated they would never vote for Romney:
If Romney picks Scott Walker, would this change your decision?
Screw Romney, that is an insult to Walker.
