Here's a totally unsubstantiated rumor: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said that he's heard that Romney did not pay any taxes for 10 years. Democrats have criticized Romney for not releasing more than two years of his tax returns. But there has never been anything to suggest that Romney's tax bill was zero.
The presumptive GOP candidate has said he always paid all of the taxes he was required by law to pay. But he has said releasing more tax returns would likely not quiet critics.
And so speculation has run rampant. In an interview with the Huffington Post, Reid said that a month ago someone who invested with Bain Capital, called his office to say that Romney, "didn't pay any taxes for 10 years."(continued)

Rush said today that somebody from Harvard called him and said that Obama had the worst grades ever seen at Harvard and only made it because the professors there covered his ass. Of course now if Barack Hussein wants to prove otherwise he'll just have to show his college transcripts.

Your suggestion has a lot of merit...the IRS can easily do that, in fact, for executive office appointees they do it routinely, with a permission slip to do it signed by the applicant. The report comes back: all returns filed, no taxes due and owing.
After he does that, all he has to do is say, well, Obama, I showed me mine now show me your college/birth/passport records.
Given the level of corruption in the Democratic party, I imagine the Obama campaign already has procured Romney’s tax returns from the IRS. By not releasing the returns, the Romney campaign is forcing the Obama campaign to leak the returns — which could backfire on Obama. Feels like a game of chess.
This is easy to fix. Romney should just release digital copies full of layers and evidence of tampering just like the President’s birth certificate and then the press will just accept them and criticize anyone who questions them even if a law enforcement investigation proved they were a fraud.
Harry Reid is taking direction from the 0Bammma machine, following Alinsky-like tactics to discredit the opposition. In some circles, this is tantamount to extortion. Harry should be investigated, questioned regarding his “source,” and dealt with accordingly. Reid is poor excuse for a human being is not serving the needs of Nevada nor the nation! Has anyone asked him when he will stop committing felonies?
Won't help him, either. In politics, if an action neither helps nor hurts, you don't do it.
Romney has an easy counterplay for this without disclosing his taxes. Obviously, Romney doesn’t do his own taxes - he has accountants do that. Have the accountants who filed his taxes submit a sworn affidavit that they did prepare and file tax returns for Mitt Romney during the last ten years.
Falsifies the claim but keeps the returns secret. If the Dems then want to press Romney to disclose his taxes, he should adopt a “I’ll show you mine when Obama shows his” tact. Throw the challenge back in their faces.
Oh, and here’s a new tack - promise to release his tax returns the day the Democrat Senate passes a budget.
I really wish the campaign would pick this idea up. It’s perfect. Unless, of course, he didn’t pay taxes one year. Otherwise, Dingy Harry has given him the perfect out for this BS tactic Ovomit is using to detract from his record.
If you cannot get your particular candidate nominated, then you are pleased to insure that the Anti-American RAT will be reelected, just out of spite.
And to think that so many of us served so long to defend your right to be spiteful and stab us in the back!
