Paul Ryan, worse than Palin (Unintentional Laff Riot!)

True, Mitt Romney’s new nominee for vice president possesses certain attributes that Sarah Palin lacked, namely a wonky intellect and speaking voice that does not sound like nails on chalkboard. But Paul Ryan may actually turn out to be a worse veep choice than Ms. Palin for several reasons.

1. Ryan further delays, and perhaps permanently scraps, Romney’s move to the center. Eric Fehrnstrom, a top Romney aide, signaled that the candidate intended to reinvent himself as a moderate after winning the primary season. But we never got that promised Etch-a-Sketch moment and now, likely, never will. How is Romney going to take advantage of his shape-shifting to attract independent voters if he continues to run as a “severe conservative”? McCain didn’t need Palin to establish his independent, mavericky bona fides, but Ryan moves Romney in the wrong direction.

2. Palin’s nomination gave McCain a nice, but short-lived, bounce in the polls – and enlivened McCain-Palin campaign rallies. By contrast, Ryan gave Romney no national bounce in the polls and was greeted with a tepid response from voters. Romney only got a slight bounce in Ryan’s home state of Wisconsin, a place Obama can electorally afford to lose but will probably still win anyway. And since Ryan needs to be kept away from seniors and more electorally significant places like Florida (see Point No. 3, below), the newly minted team had to split up when Romney headed south. Palin played everywhere, if that was your flavor of crazy.

4. Palin was the first female on a Republican ticket. Ryan is a white, rich guy of the majority religion. Nothing to see here. Move along....

With two conservatives at the end, and Mitt’s number had never reached more than 40% and about 60% of primary voters were conservatives, it’s obvious that had one of the conservatives had ability to persuade voters to vote for him and not the other guy, Mitt would lose. Yet, they both stayed. Mitt won the primaries is not the sign of his campaign’s success. It’s the conservatives’ failure. You can argue about anything else, that fact remains.

By your standard almost every recent president and VP were “draft dodgers” along with many prominent conservatives: Dick Cheney - family deferment, Dubya - “cushy” Air National Guard berth, Dan Quayle - “cushy” Army Guard berth, Rush Limbaugh - polynidal cysts, Ronald Reagan - “cushy” stateside movie-making assignment, Al Gore - “photojournalist” in Vietnam with THREE bodyguards assigned full-time, Barack Obama - never even registered for Selective Service, Joe Biden - student draft deferments and then 4F from asthma, John Edwards - never served.

Anybody who cares enough to look can find out what Palin actually said. Anybody who cares enough to look at a map can confirm what she said was right. Anybody who four years later believes Palin said what Tina Fey actually did and puts it in an article, like this writer did, either doesn’t care what the truth is or is actively lying.

Look, only 38% of this year's Republican support comes from folks who say 'Yeah, I go along with Mitt' ~ 61% comes from people who say they despise Obama and everything he stands for.

Ryan's name recognition level was less than that ~ so adding him to the ticket didn't bring anything new as far as most folks knew. Odds are, though, that most of Ryan's support comes from ABOs and not from Mittbots.

Not everybody was perfect like I was, so they were rejected. Then, too, where you went and what you did was always for the good of the service. When "W" volunteered they were flying that jet plane in the Nam. Guys with cysts at the base of the spine had never been welcome, and a fellow with Peronies was simply not fit for service ~ if he was wounded they'd spend entirely too much time with his extremities and not enough where he was actually hurting.

If nobody looked Bill Clinton took the pre-induction physical THREE TIMES and was never inducted. KInda' strange, eh! Haven't figured out yet what it is keeps the Romneys out of the service, but it's probably something to do with something males get or have ~ like Peronie's syndrome.

Cheney would never make it through basic training. Ronald Reagan wasn't exactly a spring chicken at the time, but he did serve in Army instruction films ~ the Algore was a sad case. Apparently he had to pull some strings to get to Nam. His old man tried to keep him out. Obviously he was a problem for his commanding officer, but he himself didn't try to get out of it.

What an awful lot of folks didn't know at the time (during the Nam) was that you didn't have to just sit around waiting on the draft ~ you could volunteer for the draft (Giving you just 2 years service) and they'd run you through a pre-induction physical. There was a good chance you'd fail. Most did.

Like I said you had to be perfect to get in ~ (with waivers on some imperfections). This wasn't widely advertised because Selective Service didn't want to be accused of interfering with enlistments ~ which always nailed you for more than 2 years service time.

So, I didn't mention Dan Quayle. He and I were vying for the exact same job in the Indiana national guard.

They had openings ~ somebody had decided that the Indiana Air Guard ought to ferry planes to and from the Nam ~ and the Army ground units were ruled by martinets who thought if you missed those guard meetings YOU SHOULD GO ON ACTIVE DUTY such as was provided for in the rules.

So, Indiana Guard units had vacancies, and there they were telling me "Ya gots ta go boy" and that was AFTER I got out of the Army. Again, those martinets thought you should do that reserve duty as required immediately after service, and since I'd enlisted from Indiana I was on their list.

Working in Washington DC I then did the smart thing and filed an appeal ~ something about "I live in Washington DC and there's already too darned many draft dodgers here so why would I want to drive to Naptown every 4th weekend for drill with another bunch" ~ and, they let me go ~ but I still have the little list around here somewhere that identified the vacancies. Doing some research I found that Dan Quayle took the vacancy I'd rejected.

Small world eh!

Shortly after that Nixon came up with the draft lottery, and then he ended the active draft. They began paying the troops a living wage, and finally he pulled us out of Nam. The Democrats hated him with a passion.

I"d still like to get even with the Democrats.

nana, I think he imagines he's making some sort of insult by bringing up the 100,000. The objective there was to allow physically capable fellows into the military who were simply not well enough educated to pass the test BUT they were literate and could be trained.

Ollie North hates them with a passion ~ must have been one of them got in the Marine Corps with him and out shown him or something.

We had one of the 100,000 fellows in our unit in Germany. They kept him occupied sweeping floors, but he didn't think that was right and demanded to be sent to the Nam. Our unit had mostly Namvets in it so they all tried to talk him out of it with the old 'You ain't missin' anything" story.

He persisted and wrote his Senators and Representative. They pressured DOD and he was run through the Sergeants school at Benning, which he passed with flying colors, and then he was sent on to Nam where he seemed to do quite well. Last time i heard anything about him he was an SFC. Got his picture in a full page spread in a newsmagazine.

He was in the Army. Would probably have failed a full dress inspection in the Marines though, and some officer like North would have put him in the guardhouse.

There were real Forrest Gumps in the world in those days ~ i met one ~ and when the kids said "Dad you gotta' see this movie ~ it is utterly fantastic' I went ~ and there he was.

Like i said somebody thinks he's making an insult at the expense of some brave men who served in somebody else's place. I don't put up with that.

Governor Willard Mitt Romney has both a Juris Doctor and Masters of Business Administration (earned at the same time!) from Harvard. I doubt very much if his IQ would fall in the lowest percentile. He graduated in 1975 cum laude from the law school, in the top third of that class, and was named a Baker Scholar for graduating in the top five percent of his business school class. Does that sound like a moron to you? He later earned about $300 million in business. I don’t know many idiotic hundred millionaires, do you?
