The first debate between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney was an even bigger win for Romney than it appeared at the time. That's what the polls are telling us.
The Oct. 3 debate, it seems, prompted swing voters to take a second look at Romney, and it also boosted Republican voters' resolve to get out and vote.
A presidential election that once appeared to favor Obama is now razor-close again, and heading toward an unpredictable finish.
Four national polls released their first post-debate findings this week. The Pew Research Center reported that Romney had moved into the lead among likely voters, 49 percent to 45 percent. The Gallup Poll reported that Romney held a narrow lead, 49 percent to 47 percent. The Rasmussen Poll, which sometimes appears to favor Republicans, was kinder to Obama this time; it reported a tie at 48 percent each. And Reuters/IPSOS reported a tie at 45 percent.
The usual words of caution apply: These numbers are fallible snapshots of public opinion, not predictions of election outcomes. All polls come with a margin of error; the Pew survey's margin of 3.4 percent means that Romney's apparent 4-point lead could be either an even-larger advantage, or a virtual tie.
But when four major polls move in the same direction, it's no mirage. The Romney campaign found new momentum in last week's debate, and Obama hasn't yet stopped it. Moreover, the Pew poll included fascinating data that suggest some of the reasons for Romney's advance.
One was a swing toward the Republican candidate on the issue of jobs, a word Romney used over and over in last week's debate.
When Pew asked voters which candidate would do better on jobs, 49 percent named Romney against only 41 percent for Obama....

Romney does like his first debate, he will have no problems answering those liberal questions from the “impartial” CNN audience.
Obama’s gonna strain a gut being ABO. He was such a STINKER in that first debate; so stinky, in fact, that even the “one” can’t spin it. People saw how he was finally, smacked themselves on the forehead and changed their minds. It’s hard to “unsee” that debacle.

I expect him to pull a Biden, but I don’t it will work too well on Romney.
More to the point, what are the liberals running the "debate" going to do? They are the ones to be concerned about.
The real thing about the first debate was that Romney proved that he was not an ogre, and that it was safe to abandon Obama.
Once that happened, everyone who was longing to abandon Obama did so. Such a scenario is not going to be reversed.
I expect he's going to be in full out cool guy mode. Using hip jargon and mannerisms.
That's if he's cognizant.
The debate is Tuesday, correct? I'd suspect he should begin preparing for it by tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what he's doing the next three days.

Obama will certainly try to be more aggressive and strident towards Romney.
But I think Romney would do well to shift his demeanor. In response to Obama’s [expected] behavior change, Mr. Romney should “tone it down” just a bit, with the objective of coming across both to the town hall audience and the viewing public as warm and gracious while still remaining in command of the facts and issues.
In other words, he should use the second debate to distinguish his overall character from Obama’s. While Obama flails at him, Mr. Romney should deflect the blows with confidence and grace. The first debate showed him to be capable of sitting in the Oval Office. This second one should show to voters why he is “the better man” of the two.
The town hall format isn’t the best in which to shoot cannonballs. Mr. Romney should turn the tables on Obama this time around. The Kenyan may well be caught off-guard.
And then, in the final debate, when Obama and his handlers are thoroughly confused as to what to expect, Mr. Romney can come out blasting and finish him off!
I agree. The first debate was not about Obama 'phoning it in'. It was about people seeing that the previously demonized Romney, whom the press said was a gaffe machine, had answers to many of our problems and seemed to be someone competent enough to put people back to work.
The dems are the one who always think it is about nothing but personalities.
Romney should be more prepared for it if he does.
LOL! Yeah, the pundits still can’t figure out why the polls don’t seem to be favoring their guy, because they certainly don’t like his opponent.
Obama will probably try to be charming and win over the audience. But all Romney has to do is to challenge him in any way, and it will ruffle 0s feathers and his smile will disappear and will be substitued by that angry look along with the scowl.
